i posted this here cause the Empower forum has been a bit dead. and i think it has some SJ relevance.
so jeremy and i saw this movie friday night. its a religious satire where mary, the main character, sleeps with her boyfriend trying to cure him from being gay. she subsequently gets pregnant. she's very religous, has an uber-religious friend, goes to uber-religious high school.
there was one part where she's seen protesting at a planned parenthood (it only a brief thing but very hard for me).
back to the movie: because of her environment, shes not able to really tell anyone and is miserable until the school's only jewish student befriends her. her mother finally finds out somewhere near the end of her pregnancy and wants to send her to a home for deviant children (gay, unwed mothers, atheists etc.).
the movie provides a non-judgmental view of teen pregnancy. its not a super big part - more of something that drives the plot - but whats more "horrible"about her being pregnant is not that she got pregnant but that she is so isolated and has to hide it.
i only wish i had thought to make something mentioning girlmom cause you figure that teen parents will go see it, and/or allies would be interested or something.

i want to see it so bad!! maybe if i can get a babysitter today...
I want to see this too. It sounds really interesting.
It reminds me a little bit of The Magdelene Sisters
I LOVED it. I have already seen it twice! Eva Murri (i think that's her name... the girl who plays Cass) is wonderful. I even thought Mandy Moore did a great job acting in it. It is only playing at the indie movie theater around here so it is more expensive but SO worth the money. The only part I did not like was the end when Hilary Fay asks "Does Jesus still love me?" but that may be my anti-organized relgion self poking out.
i wish i could afford going to the show.... its just in theatres right now right? Ill have to wait for the video to come out....
I cant wait to watch i, it sounds good
I *really* wanted to see Saved.. because omigod.. so seems to describe my life in HS.. being in the "uber-religious" school.. three of my friends from there ended up teen parents, which was NOT okay by the schools standards.. im really excited to see the movie, hopfully it will play here.. otherwise Ill have to wait for dvd
usually theatres have matinee prices for movies playing before 6pm. they are usually $5-6 instead of the $9+.
jeremy and i go to early movies on saturdays or sundays. the theatres are less crowded.
and yeah, mandy moore was very funny.
"It reminds me a little bit of The Magdelene Sisters"
Ack, how? The Magdelene Sisters was sad, depressing, and infuriating as all hell. This is a comedic satire with Mandy Moore!
wasn't the magdalene sisters based on a true story?
Yes! I just saw it a couple days ago and LOVED it!
My favourite part was when the gay boys' boyfriend was introduced and it was my ex boyfriend Kett! I couldn't believe it!! I was like," I've seen him naked!!"
i loved it, but it is NOT at all like the magadelene sisters, other than there being a religous theme with unwed teenage mothers in it thats as far as the similarities go.
it's the first movie i've seen atleast in a while that was sympathetic to teen age mothers and showed one in a positive light (riding in cars with boys the movie was way too negative in it's portrayal of the mom atleast in my oppionion it may have been realistic but kept the steriotypes going)
anyway i really got into saved cause i was laughing my ass off one moment and then getting all emotional and relating so much to the girl the next.
really!! 8)
wow i've never seen anyone i've known in a movie before, must be cool and wierd.
I went and saw this with my mum and sister. We all adored it. Sooo good!
i saw it and i loved it, despite mandy moore whom I usually despise. I love macaully culkin's roller skate halloween costume... I love the whole movie... I think it has a great message, and although the Christian Coallition for movies or whatever thinks it is an attack on Christian values I think that it makes a wonderful statement about the nature of faith and the minimalization of the church in the religious lives of Christians.
Really off topic, but my brothers an extra in The Life of David Gale!! he's one of the students 8) Not the greatest movie, but still cool!
Cool! We should start a "brag about who you know" thread!! it's fun!
I REALLY wanna see Saved!! Im gonna try to go when I can get my mom to babysit hehe =) Off topic..3 of my friends are in the movie Elephant..has anyone seen that?? Two of them are extras (their the break dancers shown outside the school kinda in the beginning hehe) and one is the kid named Benny who actually has his own little section in the movie (if you've seen it you'll know what I mean. Its about school shootings, had a lot of resemblences to Columbine i thought.
LOL i agree!!
i remember the breakdancers!! Ok which one is Benny? (i forgot all of their names.)
maybe this should go to play and have fun.
yeah sorry i got a little too fluffy there
