Cradle Cap?

Today I had Niko at my Aunts house with me and she said she thinks he has cradle cap or however you spell it. Does anyone know any info on this or how do I get rid of it? Its really gross and I don't know how to stop it. Thanks

Cradle Cap?

Cradle cap (infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis)

What is it?

Cradle cap is a disease of the scalp in babies, characterised by greasy, yellow, scaly patches on the skin of the scalp. The condition is temporary and harmless.

Cradle cap is temporary and harmless.

What causes it?

The cause is unknown. It is not due to infection, allergy or inadequate washing.

What are the symptoms?

Greasy, yellow scaling patches that may, eventually, cause the baby's scalp to be covered in a thick, scaly layer. The condition is not itchy and the child is not distressed by it.

Who is at increased risk?

Cradle cap is very common in babies. It usually appears during the first couple of weeks of the infant's life.

What can I do at home?

The following treatment can be effective in controlling the problem, but it may have to be repeated. The baby can be made more comfortable by loosening or removing any clothing covering the scalp.

Rub a little olive oil into the baby's scalp before bed. Comb the hair with a fine-toothed comb in the morning.

When the scales have been removed, wash the baby's hair with a mild baby shampoo.

If the treatment does not work, or if the baby has eczema on the face or body, consult your doctor or a pharmacist for advice.

How is cradle cap diagnosed?

The doctor will make the diagnosis by examining the baby's head. The appearance is usually quite characteristic.

What happens if it gets worse?

In rare cases, the condition can spread to the face, or to the body, where it can cause eczema in the nappy region (the groin) and the armpits.

Future prospects

Cradle cap is a temporary condition which will disappear by itself after a while.

What is the treatment?

The doctor will probably suggest a treatment similar to the one described above. If the baby has a severe attack, the doctor may choose to treat it with a weak hydrocortisone cream, possibly in combination with a special shampoo.

Severe cases are usually referred to a skin specialist.

i tried to put the cradle cap creme stuff on juliette's head, and it didn't work, plus it smelled like shit. Theres this baby shampoo called PaulMitchell Baby Don't Cry and it works sooo good. Normally I wouldn't spend that much on baby shampoo (it costs like 5 dollars a bottle i think) but it has lasted me forever and it's the only thing that worked on juliette's head to get rid of the cradle cap. So if all else fails, u should definatley give it a try.

http://www.mustelausa.com/foam_shampoo.html

I used this foam newborn shampoo from Mustela...it got rid of my daughter's cradle cap in no time, plus a little bit goes a long way, so for $10 it lasted about 8 months. It smells great. I love all of their products. They use in all the hospital in France for the newborns.

I'm gonna try one of the shampoos for him. I'm not sure which though maybe I'll buy both and try them each out.

I put baby oil on his head and gently scrubbed at it with a soft toothbrush, then shampooed it out.

love that stuff!

i agree 100% with julesmama. I work at a salon and when skyler had cradle cap the girls told me to use paul mitchell baby dont cry shampoo and it works sooo good. I just rubbed it in and used a nail brush (because the bristles are harder than a baby brush) to get the flakes out.

I just got that Baby Don't Cry shampoo today for Tenzin, I'll let you know how it works. I got it on the advice of mamas here, so hopefully it's a winner.

Destiny got cradle cap when she was a baby...I just put baby oil on her head, let it soak in and soften it up and then used a fine tooth comb and combed through it.....dont SCRAPE their head with the comb, but press kinda firmly....The scaley parts combed right out....But it took about 3 or 4 times of doing that before it was all gone...

I got the Baby Don't Cry shampoo today, and I just used it on Kayla, and it made her hair stand up kinda. Her heair noramlly lays really flat. Maybe I'll brush it then see how it looks then. She really dosen't have a lot of hair, but enough to notice that it's kinda sticking up all over the place. Her head has dry skin or something on it, her scalp is flaky, so I figured I'd try this and see if it works.
