4 month old supply issues

i saw a post "bottle and breast" where the advicve given was stop giving bottles and lounge around nursing all day to get ur supply up. how can you quit giving bottles and just nurse without starving th baby ? if i could quit bottles n nurse more or ony nurse i would but my daughter would starve. i have a very low milk supply, from what i can pump, only an ounce!!!! sometimes less! i nurse my daughter when she wakes up at night or early morning and a sometimes a couple times during the day but unless she falls asleep she cries for more milk and is still hungry. she will scream and not latch bc no milk is coming out of me!!!!!! so i give her bottles . are you saying i could completely stop giving her bottles and just nurse? bc i dont think thats gonna work for her, she takes 6 oz of formula at a time, and i problably only make 6 oz of milk a day!!!!!!!!!! i feel like i should almost give up bc i am a full time college student and my daughter was EBF for 2 months and she is 4 months now and still gets some Breast milk........ i would nurse longer but im undecided bc i feel shes barely gettting any milk, i dont leak anymore and dont need bra pads or anything. should i let my milk dry up???? im getting so frustrated trying to breastfeed bc like i said, she will scream after nursing a few minutes bc no more milk is coming out and i am gone 3 days a week all day long and she is babysat and bottlefed then.

oops dunno how this got posted twice!! also wanted to say another issue is BD or his mom or whoever will sometimes make her a bottle and give it to her when im in the shower or doing whatever, so she will be full and not nurse anyway. i have bought several pumps, avent, dr brown and another brand and none make me have anymore milk.

you give A LOT more milk when you nurse than you do when you pump. The baby will get enough.

I think she is wanted to cut out the bottles not be encouraged to keep them. And also that is a myth that babies with " sleep long" or whatever if they eat more. Thats why people start ceral and whatnot before the baby is ready because they think they kid will sleep longer.

To the OP, I don't know what to tell you right now, but I will do some research on it and see what I can find. :D

The more you breastfeed the more you incourage your breasts to make milk.

Try feeding from one breast, and then switchiing to the next after the first is empty. Then after that if shes still hungry give her HALF of what you would normally give her.

Then 2 hours later try again with the breast. And so on every two hours until bedtime. At bedtime nurse on demand so you can get some sleep. Do this for a few days, and you should see an increase in breastmilk.

Remember that the more bottles you give is actually going to make the problem worse. The only thing you can do about BD or his mom is tell them to Always ask before giving her a bottle. Let them know you want her to be mostly breastfeeding and that you'll stop what you're doing or hurry out of the shower to feed her if she needs it.

There is a herb you can try to initially increase your supply. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I forget what it's called.

Fenugreek, I think, Julie!

Pumping is not an indicator of how much milk you can produce. Many BFing moms can't produce more than an ounce at a time, but their babies get more than enough (count me in that camp). The baby's sucking produces a stronger and greater let-down than a pump can.

Also, giving bottles is a sure way to decrease your supply. BM production is supply and demand, so every time she gets a bottle, your body thinks it doesn't need to produce those extra ounces.

Your baby won't starve if you switch back to BFing; gradually cut out the bottle over a few days and nurse every two hours. Try to avoid giving her a soother, your breasts need the stimulation.

Formula won't make her sleep longer at night.

Relax, see if you can find some Mother's Milk tea, avoid caffeine, increaes your water intake. Good luck!!

thanks, and the herb jube was talking about, if its feenugreek i have a bottle and ive taken it before, but i didnt notice a difference. ive decided to just nurse as much as i can, and she will have formula when im not there , it is too much for me to expect to pump a whole days worth of milk 3-4 days a week. i expect to keep giving her a bottle or so of formula a day when im home, or out somewhere but hopefully she will get a lot more of her nutrients from the breast milk if i continue with the extra feedings and drink a lot of water.

Are you on WIC? If so, talk to them and you may be able to get a nice double pump for free.. in WI you get a medela double electric pump (like the pump in style.. the bag just isnt as fancy.) I find that pumping several times a day (in addition to frequent nursing) seems to stimulate my milk supply pretty well. Good Luck hun, and dont give up!

I had WIC, and they gave me (well, not GAVE, I had to give it back) a hospital grade pump. It was kinda hard to get, but since K was a preemie, they gave me one. I know in some situations (like yours I am pretty sure) they WILL give you (yes to keep) a pump in style. HTH

hey, i went to WIC today, and I was told that my state has no free pumps, or any pumps. They said our WIC doesnt have the funding to provide pumps..
