i am not sure about ma but in nyc you have to first take an exam and also have 60 college credits. after passing the exam and meeting the college requirements you can then go on to the acadamy.
i have also been thinking about police work although it is a big change from doing hair lol

heres CT:

Q. What are the entry level requirements?

A. To qualify for a police officer certification in Connecticut, an applicant must meet all relevant entry level requirements, some of which are that the candidate: be a citizen of the United States; be at least 21 years of age; be a high school graduate or have passed the General Educational Development Test; possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license; have passed a validated written entry test; have been tested by an oral interview panel with at least one CT POST Council certified police officer on the panel; have been fingerprinted and a search made of fingerprint files for any record; not have been convicted by a court of any felony, any class A or class B misdemeanor or have committed any act which would constitute perjury or false statement; have been the subject of a background investigation; have been the subject of a polygraph examination (by POST Council approved polygraph examiners only); have been subject of a psychological examination; have not tested positive on a controlled drug screen; have been examined and certified by a Council accepted method as fit to perform the duties of a probationary candidate police officer (or a lateral transfer of a certified officer); have met all physical fitness requirements; have personally certified knowledge that any falsification of any statement in the application process constitutes grounds for termination.

and this is for MA:

To become a police officer in the Commonwealth of MA, applicants must:

Be a U.S. citizen (birth or naturalized)
Be at least 21 years of age
Possess a High School Diploma or have a G.E.D. Certificate or served at least 3 years in the United States Armed Forces with an honorable discharge or release.
Possess a valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license

also remember wherever you look you are going to have to take a civil service test. so look on your countys website for dates when the test will be given. you will be picked from that test depending on how well you do on it.

Back in 2000 i was so broke and desperate that I applied to the Police Academy locally and won a scholarship.
The day I was to start the physical training, I drove the 20 miles, parked my car, took one look and said "No way".
I turned around and went home.
I'm still not sure if that was a good decision or not.

It didn't look bad per say, I think I was just afraid of the commitment at the time.
As I sit here, searching Craigslist for jobs I can't afford to take because of daycare and jobs I am unqualified for because of a lack of education I wonder if I should have gone through with it....

For sure the physical tests in Ontario are brutal from what I've heard. But I'm sure it can be done with determination and exercise to prepare for it.

I havent really talked to my SO about getting into that field.
I finally told one person IRL. My mom.

I thought she was going to freak about it, like your going to have 2 kids and its dangerous. But nope she seemed pretty interested in it. So once im on maternity leave im going to look more into it. Then once im 21 i can get things started.

Good thing is one of my mothers friends is a retired police officer from MA. So i gotta contact her and find out more about it.

Well i looked into it much much more.

Come to find out a newer girl that started working here, her husband is a local police officer.

So found out i have to apply to a specific town Police department. If they hire me, they hire me as a police recruit. Then i get a salary and insurance benifets and they send me to the police academy. She said it lasts about 3 months.

Then once your done with the academy, you move up to a police officer.

So all i need to do is wait till im 21 and get my GED. Then start looking!

not that being a cop in a small town isn't dangerous (i worry about my BF all the time) but it isn't as bad as being in a city. so working in a small town with all the money you can make is probably a good move. also like you said if they send you to the academy (you don't have to pay for it that way! in MA do you still have to take the civil service test to get picked up by a town or village?) like you said you get paid the entire time. you might get stuck on midnights (here our shifts are 12-8am, 8-4pm and 4-12) or whatever the shift is that no one wants to work. you could also look into getting a job in the police dept (an easy in and a way to learn a lot about it without all the commitment) like i did, as a dispatcher (they also pay incrediably well). PM me if you wanna talk more about it.
