anyone interested in reading another book together?

I know the last couple attempts didn't pan out too well but we should keep trying. Here are a couple I think would be fun & informative to read as a group.

The Mommy Myth: The Idealization of Motherhood and How It Has Undermined Women by Susan J. Douglas, Meredith W. Michaels

Catfight : Rivalries Among Women--from Diets to Dating, from the Boardroom to the Delivery Room by Leora Tanenbaum

Anyone interested? Anyone have any other suggestions?

I'm interested...kind of a slow reader, though, because I don't have a lot of recreational reading time.

I'm interested but can't do anything until the 15th, so I'll participate at that time. I'm down for the second book listed.

Cool. I'm glad this thread is getting interest.

That's one vote for each book. the_lissa & erika which one do you two want to read? Or do you have a suggestion for a different book?

I don't have any suggestions, they both sound interesting but I guess I'd pick the second if I had to choose. Either is fine with me, though. :)

I'm interested...but I have no idea what either book is really about. Could you post a summary for me?

There's an interview with one of the authors of the Mommy Myth in the recent Bitch magazine. I can photocopy it & snail mail it to you if you want (pm me if you want it).

The other one I saw if the bookstore but didn't have time to flip through so I looked it up at amazon. You can read their description here...

naivete you might want to wait, unless you don't mind buying the other book if it gets more votes later or you plan on reading Mommy Myth even if it's not picked. there are two votes for each book

Mommy Myth - julesmama, naivete

Catfight - SilverMoon, erika

Haven't voted - the_lissa, Pook, astrogirl(I figure I shouldn't vote since I suggested the books)

Read about both of 'em and I would like to read Catfight. Even if that's not the book we read, I'll be picking up a copy. :D

Quote:
The Mommy Myth: The Idealization of Motherhood and How It Has Undermined Women
by Susan J. Douglas, Meredith W. Michaels

Susan Douglas first took on the media's misrepresentation of women in her funny, scathing social commentary Where the Girls Are. Now, she and Meredith Michaels, have turned a sardonic (but never jaundiced) eye toward the cult of the new momism: a trend in American culture that is causing women to feel that only through the perfection of motherhood can true contentment be found. This vision of motherhood is highly romanticized and yet its standards for success remain forever out of reach, no matter how hard women may try to "have it all."
The Mommy Myth takes a provocative tour through the past thirty years of media images about mothers: the superficial achievements of the celebrity mom, the news media's sensational coverage of dangerous day care, the staging of the "mommy wars" between working mothers and stay-at-home moms, and the onslaught of values-based marketing that raises mothering standards to impossible levels, just to name a few. In concert with this messaging, the authors contend, is a conservative backwater of talking heads propagating the myth of the modern mom.
This nimble assessment of how motherhood has been shaped by out-of-date mores is not about whether women should have children or not, or about whether once they have kids mothers should work or stay at home. It is about how no matter what they do or how hard they try, women will never achieve the promised nirvana of idealized mothering. Douglas and Michaels skillfully map the distance traveled from the days when The Feminine Mystique demanded more for women than the unpaid labor of keeping house and raising children, to today's not-so-subtle pressure to reverse this thirty-year trend. A must-read for every woman.

Catfight : Rivalries Among Women--from Diets to Dating, from the Boardroom to the Delivery Room
by Leora Tanenbaum

Women often behave toward one another in sneaky, underhanded, ruthlessly competitive ways. Catfight is a remarkably researched and insightful foray into the American woman's world of aggression, rivalry, and competition. Tanenbaum draws on real-life examples and the most important studies to date in psychology, human aggression, psychoanalytic theory, and social movements to uncover the pressures that leave women regarding one another as adversaries rather than allies.
Most women highly value female approval and friendship, but the darker side of sisterhood can evoke covertly competitive behavior:

* A career woman quits to become a full-time mom. Although she misses her job and the income, she belittles you, a working mother, as selfishly unconcerned with your children's welfare.
* You're at a party in mid-conversation with your boyfriend when an attractive woman comes over to mingle. You move closer to him, touching him and glaring at her.
* A female colleague "accidentally" misplaces your files and "forgets" to e-mail you about an important upcoming meeting.

What is the state of "sisterhood" today? And how much progress have we really made?

Both books summarized. I still choose the Mommy Myth :)

I would yeah, but I need to know which one first cause I can't afford to buy two books at the same time, since mommy myth is like 30 bucks.

mmkay how 'bout the mommy myth first since I think it's more likely some of us will find that one at our public library? any objections?

everyone be sure to check your local library & fill out a form requesting the library buy a copy of both (if they don't have them) so you don't have to spend any money (unless you want to).

and then the people who have no interest in mommy myth can either wait this one out or start without us & we'll jump in the conversation after we're done with mommy myth.

I agree with erika. I need another week to get the book because payday isn't until Thursday. I'll try to pick up a copy of both since I'm interested in reading Catfight anyway.

I checked out the price on Mommy Myth on Amazon.com ($17), and I can't really fit that into our budget this next payday. So I'm going to go ahead and order Catfight and join the discussion on that book when it starts.

I just got The Mommy Myth, so I am going to start reading it now because I am so busy with school and work. I want to make sure I read it in time for the discussion.

I can't get it until the 15th, but I don't mind if you all have already gotten it and want to get a head on reading it, I can always catch up :) I've already ordered Catfight off of Ebay. Mommy myth is never on ebay though, so looks like I'll have to splurge and buy it from the store.
