Moving (long distance) questions! x-posted to LJ

I am an unexperienced mover! I have only moved once as an adult, and my dad rented the truck and it was local and I didn't do much! All of my belongings also fit into my old room. Now, I have lived in this apartment for about 3 years and I have accumulated a LOT more things. We have a real couch, a kitchen table, 2 big beds, 4 dressers, three TV's, two entertainment center things, um, 3 sitting chairs, etc etc etc. It's a lot of stuff for me compared to how bare my apartment used to be!

I am not willing to sell all of my stuff and start over. Though that would easier and cheaper in the short term. I have been either given what I have, or got it from IKEA, or saved my pennies for it, and I like what I have. I plan on getting a 16 foot truck (I hope everything fits!) and right now I found one from Penske for $831, last month it was $870. We were considering towing my car, BUT we would have to 1) get a bigger truck that would be $1,227 AND 2) rent a car carrier which is $200-$275 because the smaller truck can't do it, and it only fits two.

I don't know what I was asking there, um tips maybe? Oh, and do you think the truck rental prices will go down since they already did since last month? I'm worried about putting it on my CC too early, or the price going up.

Boxes: I aksed one of my managers if I could take some boxes from work but he said he would really reccomend I just buy them since the warehouses that boxes are stored in tend to be dirty and a lot of bugs and roaches crawl around boxes and lay eggs in the cracks of them. EW. I think I should probably just buy boxes, but I dont know how many to get or where they would be cheapest.

Please share your wisdom!

You should go to your local grocery store and ask them for boxes.
I wouldn't buy boxes unless you have to, since they just get thrown away and wasted later on.

I moved from CA to WA when I was 17 and we paid about $500 for a truck rental through Ryder along with the car carrier thing but this was 10 years ago.
Before you reserve a truck, ask them about price changes and whether they will do a price adjustment if it goes down between then and now.

If you can't get free boxes, try asking a big moving company. At the one I worked for, they would sell used boxes for half price (the professional movers packed/unpacked, so they weren't in bad shape). Sometimes people would say that the used boxes were only supposed to be sold to clients, not the public, but it depended on who you asked and how much stock they had.

Also, the moving company had tons of different kinds of boxes, some were ones I would never have thought of. Like ones specifically made to hold your dishes, or a "wardrobe box" that would hold hung up clothes. A few of the specialty boxes might really come in handy.

Save your newspaper right now too, or you'll have to buy packing paper.

My only advice about the truck would be to keep out a few optional things for the end. If everything doesn't fit, get rid of these items. Don't pack the whole truck and then say "oh crap, I can't fit these boxes! Can you unload and we'll get rid of that chair?".

Oh, what about driving your car? Would the gas be really expensive?

I'm driving my car also, and yes, it will probably be very expensive. I'll be filling up the truck AND my car, scary!
I really dont know where the $ is going to come from yet!

We are trying to get rid of all the baby things we dont need and stuff that I am not attached to so we can fit in the 22 foot truck. If we cant fit everything and I dont want to get rid of it, my dad lives semi close by and I could take it to his house I guess.
My BF seems to think I wont have a problem fitting everything in though.

That's a great idea about asking moving companys if they have boxes, I think we are going with Penske and I remember seeing boxes at there store before.

Good idea about asing if I can get the lower price if it goes down! I think that is what I will do.

After my manager talked about roaches and stuff, I am so hesitant to get boxes from stores esp since they will be in my livinvg room for weeks!

Thanks for the suggestions yall, very helpful :)
