Stressing Out - Blah!!!

Okay, so today I went to the doctor to find out for sure if I'm pregnant. They did a urine test and it slowly but surely came up positive. So they were all, "Congratulations you're pregnant!!"

Then they wanted to do the first ultrasound right then and there to see how far along I am. I was so excited, but when they did the ultrasound, they couldn't find anything. The doctor was telling me how that is very normal esp since I am so early into the pregnancy (4wks6days since last period). The uterine lining was very thick and I may not even be that far along because my cycles are so long (like 33-36 days). She said that she would just schedule me for another ultrasound in 2 weeks and that we should definitely see something by then.

So just when I was starting to feel okay again, she tells me, "BUT... if you start having painful cramping, go to the ER because it could be an ectopic pregnancy." Argg............... Why'd she have to say that? Now I'm going to be stressing OUT until my next US (which isn't until Nov. 17!!!!).

I mean, I've been researching it on the internet and I've been getting good news. First of all, it would be very unlikely for me to have an ectopic pregnancy and secondly, I read that the earliest visible gestational sac is usually seen at 4.5 weeks - and this is pertaining to the avg. 28 day cycle. Seeing as my cycles are so long, I would obviously have ovulated later.

Anyway... I can go on and on... but I'm just making myself feel worse. These next three weeks are going to go by soooooooooooooo slowwwwwwwwww.

Well first of all...Congratulations!!
and don't worry about them not being able to find anything, if it is in fact that early then that makes sense.
I don't know why nurses/doctors say stuff like that. A woman i worked with was really upset when they couldn't find the heartbeat. But it was too early to hear it, But they had said "we MIGHT be able to hear it." Then when they couldn't..she was upset. At the next appointment everything turned out to be perfectly fine.
Try not to stress out....I'm sure everything will be great.

Thank you bearbear for replying.
I know I stress out too much. I think I drive myself crazy. Haha... anyway... I've never known anyone that got an ultrasound at 4 weeks. I mean I've heard of 6 weeks, but 4 is really early. Y'know?? What should I expect... the pregnancy test is just barely coming up positive as it is. Agh... I hate when I overanalyze like this. I just need to make it through these next few weeks and I'm hoping that everything will be just fine.

Congrats :) I think doctors have to say things like that, because if they don't mention the risks to everyone (even if it's a slight, really rare risk) and it happens, they can get sued for not giving you proper information.

I had my doctor tell me the same thing too during the first little while before they could do an ultrasound.

Congratulations!

Lemme tell you what happened to me... maybe it'll put your mind at ease.

Short version:

I have a 34 day cycle, by the way.

Tested positive before my period was due. Went outta town on a work trip. Cramped and spotted and freaked out and went to the ER. Through a series of wacky misadventures, wound up having an unneccesary laproscopy to check for an ectopic pregnancy as they couldn't see anything in my uterus on an ultrasound. Went home, saw some ditsy Physicians' Assistant at Ed's Gynocology & Take-Out who told me I could still have an ectopic pregnancy and sent me home to cry and freak out and supposedly"finish" miscarrying (I never started)...and get pissed...and get on the web...and do some math. Having a pretty good handle on the conception date and my HCG levels from my hospital misadventures, I figured out that I was a lot eariler along in my pregnancy than the folks at the hospital thought I was. I went for the final ultrasound that the PA recommended, and told the tech to forget everything that was in my chart, and explained my suspicions. Sure enough, the little seamonkey was right where he was supposed to be, heart beating away, and very much there...just big enough to see that day on the machine a week after my emergency room visit.

And by the way, that was the last ultrasound I had save the one to rule out twins a great deal later. I'd had enough of medicallized pregnancy at that point.

Exactly. Doctors do know a lot - but they're not always right, and it's always good to question what they tell you and take it with a grain of salt. I'll share my little misadventure:

I was around 5-6 months pregnant and I had an ultrasound done. During this U/S the technician was VERY quiet so of course I got a little nervous. She goes out, and calls the actual .. doctor.. guy (forget what his actual title was) and brings him in, whispering and pointing at the screen. So they decide to do a vaginal ultrasound as well. They finally tell me the reason for everything, is that my cervix is opening and thinning and they think I'm going into labor. So of course, I get REALLY nervous. They told me to go to the emergency room RIGHT AWAY and they'd call and make sure they were ready for me there. So I go there, and the ER doctors talk to the first one and start talking to me about suturing my cervix. They of course, want to make sure though. They check the cervix via pelvic exam, and it feels fine. They do two more ultrasounds, and can't find a darn thing wrong with it, but they aren't experts in it so they decide to put me on bedrest until I can see the best U/S doctor in Western Canada the week after, in case they're just missing something.

So I spend about a week just lying in bed, not able to get up to do ANYTHING besides go to the bathroom. I go see the other U/S technician and he agrees with the ER doctors - there's NOTHING wrong, at all, and everyone's wondering what the heck the first doctors were seeing.

My cervix was just fine and dandy, and held in place perfectly until 3 days before my due date.

I went to a clinic to see if i was pregnant and sure enough i was. They wanted to do an ultrasound to see how far i was and when i went they couldnt see anything. I came in about a week later and they were able to see the gestational sac. I have a 28 day cycle and i was like 5 weeks 5 days when they were able to see that. I then went to the gyno and they did an ultrasound at 7 weeks and they were able to see a white blob. Dont worry, you probably were just to early in your pregnancy to see anything. Good luck!
