continuous UTI's

I've been getting urinary tract infections like every week i swear. I'm pretty sure that's what it is b/c i feel like i have to pee all the time but can't, and i have that weird burning/hurting feeling when i go. It makes me so uncomfortable. Seriously i get one, it lasts for a few days, goes away for a few days...repeat.

I'm wondering though if maybe i'm allergic to latex. I usually get them soon after i have sex, or when i drink alot...but usually when i drink i have sex so nevermind that one! hahaha Anyways you think this is a UTI or something else? I think i'm going to call my gyno tomorrow and try to get an appointment this week b/c this is killing me.

if you are allergic to latex you will probably hurt constantly afterwards. i do that and im allergic. also i swell up really bad. it sucks

you may actually have ovarian cysts. a lot of people mistake them for urinary tract infections because they have a lot of the same symptoms.

do you always pee after sex? fucking can push bacteria up into the urethra, so it's important to clear it out afterwards.

i get UTIs fairly often. i try and incorporate cranberry juice into my daily diet, but then i just forget until i get another UTI and say "dammit julie!" :)

antibiotics are generally needed to clear them up, so a visit to the doc is in order.

minimize your sugar intake as much as possible, especially soda. Drink as much water as you can. Drink only 100% juice, especially cranberry juice that is not sweetened or is sweetened with only grape juice. Blueberry juice is good for you too. Apple juice actually has a lot of sugars in it that can get built up in urine.
Make sure to eat a good diet full of fruits and vegetables, and low in fat, salt, and sugar. Too many carbs can be bad too, because they are sugars. I used to get really bad UTIs and other problems, and when I changed my diet they decreased dramatically. Drinking a lot of water is probably the most important thing. These are preventative measures, they should be a part of your lifestyle all the time to help you avoid UTIs. I agree that you should go to the doctor, UTI's can become extremely painful if left untreated. I once got an infection in my kidney from ignoring my UTI. I also agree that it is very important to pee after sex.

I usually don't pee after sex...but i'm going to now.

I am addicted to cokes...well dr. pepper. But i have managed to cut out caffeine (drinking caffeine free) and i've been drinking a lot more water and V8. I usually only eat one meal a day, and maybe like a snack or something...my meds have killed my appetite...but i <3 carbs, that's like all i eat...i guess i'm going to try backing off on those too then.

*possibly tmi*
I am going to call and make an appointment...i need to get on bc anyways. I was so uncomfortable the other night i was about to cry. I want her to really check me out good b/c i've been having this funky discharge that looks like lochia (sp?), you know, that discharge you get when pg. My body is fucked up.

have you had a baby recently? If so, it could be a cervical infection causing the pain and discharge.
It's the sugar in soda that is really bad for your urinary tract, not the caffeine. I know it's really difficult, but you should really try to cut that out of your diet. It makes a world of difference. I don't know if this would work for you, but to replace soda I buy sparkling mineral water and mix it with cranberry (or any other) juice. Drinking a lot of herbal tea can also help you get enough sugar free fluids. (a little honey shouldn't hurt)

you might also want to try taking a cranberry capsule every day in order to prevent UTI's.

You can get them at the pharmacy in the vitamins/supplement section - Swiss Herbal makes a great one called Cran-Maxx that cleared up my last UTI right quick.

Angelica, read the suggestions above to prevent it. They really do help, I haven't gotten one since I changed my lifestyle except once - and it was after christmas- I was pregnant and hadn't been eating well.

Also, if they are recurring once a month with antibiotics, the antibiotics you are using are probably not strong enough. Sometimes bacteria can mutate and adapt, so the antibiotic starts to work and then the infection builds up again. I would suggest talking to your doctor about a different/stronger antibiotic.

• Causes: Bacteria entering and multiplying in the urethra cause a UTI. Sexual intercourse, waiting too long to urinate, and wiping from back to front can introduce bacteria into the urethra. If the infection spreads to the bladder, it's known as cystitis. Untreated cystitis can sometimes lead to a kidney infection.

• Symptoms: Frequent and painful urination (often a burning sensation) as well as the urge to urinate when you don't need to are common symptoms. Others include fever, chills, nausea and vomiting, and lower back and pelvic pain.

• Diagnosis: A urine sample is checked for elevated levels of bacteria and white blood cells.

• Treatment: Antibiotics, such as Macrobid, are usually given in a three-day course. (Several antibiotics are considered safe to use during pregnancy.) An over-the-counter pain reliever such as Uristat can help ease discomfort.

Some women have found relief by using alternative treatment methods, such as acupuncture. When done together with a course of antibiotics, it can help decrease pain and reduce recurrence rates, according to Susan Kaplan, M.D., a urologist and licensed medical acupuncturist who treats patients in New York City.

• Prevention: To help stave off infection, keep the vaginal and rectal areas clean, maintain a healthy diet, don't wait to urinate, and drink several glasses of water a day. Urinating before and after sex also helps, as does wearing cotton underwear so moisture won't be trapped and create a breeding ground for bacteria. (If possible, avoid wearing thong underwear.) Try not to drink liquids that irritate the bladder, such as alcohol and citrus juices, and skip douching, which kills the "good" bacteria that help promote vaginal health.

There are protective foods that can help as well: Yogurt, which contains active cultures, is a source of good bacteria, while cranberry juice and blueberries have been shown to help prevent bacteria from adhering to the bladder. For some women, an antibiotic may be prescribed to be taken after sex. For more information, visit www.urologychannel.com.
