Surely I can't be the only one!
(am I going to lose friends over this?)
In every dyke/leftwing/feminist circles for the last 7 or 8 years it seems that everyone adores her..
I go to a party and someone puts a CD of hers on, there goes the mood..
On a regular basis on my lj friends pages I am subjected to her 'meaningful' lyrics cut&pasted. I've had cute girls stop talking to me in pubs cause I didn't share their enthusiasm.
Even my lovely wife used to be an Ani fan, I bought her a ticket to her concert back in '98. Thankfully she got over it and so I no longer have to hear it in my own house.
She is not the messiah, she is a half-rate folk singer with an annoying voice.
(And I'm saying this as a fan of folk music)

i like her, i love untouchable face and i loved the one that came out post 9/11 addressing it but past that i'm not so into it.
Ha! I have to laugh because I feel the same EXACT way. I haven't listened much because I can't deal with much more than a song or two. Also, alot of people here also quote Tori Amos. Not a fan at all... I can understand that they may be talented, they're just not my cup of tea.
Whenever I ask for women positive music, people always proclaim, "Ani or Tori!" Can anyone her direct me to some awesome female music thats not one fo them?
Erykah Badu
Mystic
Jill Scott
Zap Mama
Les Nubiens
Angie Stone
Joni Mitchell
Victoria Williams (although if you think Ani's voice is annoying look out)
more.... I would love some suggestions, too.
I've never liked Ani. I tried listening to her, because everyone tells me I would love her, but I just can't get into her.
Now, I do love Tori. I think she has an awesome voice, and her songs are really beautiful.
The only problem to me with women-positive music is that most of it is so boring. I can't stand folky-type music, unless its Dylan. I do really like bands like L7 and Babes in Toyland, but I don't know if that's the type of music you were looking for.
i really love the dixie chicks
dar williams
nelly furtado
india arie
those are just a few off the top of my pre-caffeinated head
My absolute favorite female singer of all time is Rickie Lee Jones; if you haven't already heard her stuff, I definitely suggest checking it out. Another one I like is Christina Aguilera, which is probably really the only pop music I listen to, but I think her voice is really powerful.
I honestly, have never listened to Ani. I'm more of a type to stick to my own music and not really branch out unless I hear a song on the radio and decide to look up more about the artist, and I never really listen to the radio. I'm more into jazz and instrumental myself.
I've never listened to Ani either.....
I am more into classic rock, Fiona Apple/Christina Aguilera (which both are on perpetual repeat in my car)/Madonna, and other pop-ish things... :?
I play guitar so that's where the classic rock comes in.
OOOh, I second Rickie Lee Jones and Dar Williams. "When I Was a Boy"....oooooh it is just so beautiful.
ha, i cant listen to it either, and trust me ive tried.
i do like tegan and sara, dixie chicks, christina....
riley is in love with pop right now, and i will admit, i might even listen to it when she is not in the car
My five year old is so into pop right now too. She is how I found out how good Justin Timberlake and Beyonce really are. And now I love them. (In a five year old kind of way.)
I also cannot stand Ani. I HATE that sound with a passion.
I am sure she is prolific and has such a wonderous message but I can get the message elsewhere....
Yuck.
tracy chapman-i love her. i grew up listening to her because of my dad. he also introduced me to erykah badu. anyway, yeah i'm not so much of an ani fan, but it's mostly just because her voice seriously annoys me. I have read some of her lyrics, and I think a lot of them are really powerful. maybe she should just stick to writing? just my opinion!
Wow, I'm not alone..
Seriously, with the way some people passionately adore Ani I was certain I was going to get flamed!
Hmm PJ Harvey first 2 or 3 albums were good then she got a bit ugh.. Though is slowly returning to form..
50 ft Queenie is good to listen to as a pick up.
I second Babes in Toyland, where would my adolescence have been without them? They sacked Courtney Love didn't they? Maybe some old school mum can confirm if my failing memory is correct on that one.
Everyone seems to like Le Tigre these days, Peaches is a bit last year...
Female musicians I like include Kim Deal, Hope Sandoval, Lydia Lunch, Siouxsie, Lisa Germano, Kim Gordon..
How could I forget Patti Smith & Janis Joplin?
What do you do when your best friend *LOVES* Ani and you buy her tickets to the show?
Well you buy her tickets of course. Then you get all exicited, hyped up to go listen to Ani and proceed to......
fall asleep during the concert.
Yeah, can't really say I'm that into Ani.
Ok i must just throw my say in here:
i still olove ani.
when julie first sent me living in clip nothing else was in nmy CD player for months. now im not as obsessive, but still love her.
and my tip for the day: never put in ani when you want to get a party jumping.
My husband has sworn ani out of our daughters car when she turns sixteen, on account that shes been falling asleep to it in the car all her life. hes pretty sure those same effects will linger when she starts driving herself.
Ok, just wanted to say all that.
i love kim deal too. she kicks ass. i saw her in august, woohoo!!
i forgot i'd sent you living in clip, lindsay! awww!
i will always and forever adore ani because i fell hardcore in love with her when i was 14. ani, bob dylan (i cut my teeth on bob dylan, hence the kiddos name), bob marley, nine inch nails, pink floyd, tori amos...that was the soundtrack of my formative years. and uh, kinda still, heh. i had some underground cool kid bands thrown in there, mainly for appearance, but that was mainly it.
even now, ani takes me back, and pink floyd on the radio will launch me into one of my dorky "no, did you hear that, that sound UNDER the music? amazing! no listen!" speeches.
my car stereo is fucked up, so the blue reckoning ani cd has been stuck in there for months, and i'm TIRED of it, although it puts the kids to sleep. so i listen to the radio and that combined with two nights a week spent at the clubs (and karaoke) has translated into a liking of rrrreallly bad music. as in, i'm getting the cd of my OTHER girlfriend, miz lindsay lohan, for xmas...
ohhh julie dont do thaaattt!
I ALMOST want to buy the new Lindsay Lohan cd... Even though it goes against everything I believe in, I kinda think her new single is kinda catchy, in an unoriginal, over-processed poppy kind of way.. :-)
i'll let you know how it is! of course, she could put out a CD consisting entirely of stomach growling and i would buy it, because when she comes back to my place after a night at the club, i want her to see it on the shelf.
(welcome to julie's PretendWorld)
now that i've thoroughly embarrassed myself, back to strong woman music!
Yeah I do not like Ani or Tori. I don't really like folk music all that much. I'm an avid pop/hip-hop listener. I dunno why I just like there stuff ya know.
Eww, I can never think of Lindsey Lohan having sex. People always stop my sister on the street and comment on how she looks just like Lohan. It happens 5 times a week. I never want to think of my sister sleeping with anyone.
I just realized something... Now I know most of my musical tastes are still stuck in the 80s, but why hasn't anyone mentioned Joan Jett? She kicked ass back in the day...
And I know I'm going back on what I said about not liking folky type music, but Aimee Mann (I know I misspelled her first name) has some really pretty songs. Especially Pavlov's Bell. So pretty. I heard it on Buffy once and fell in love with it.
Courtney Love was never an official member of the band. She has been friends with Kat Bjelland since the early 80s and they were in a band together called SUGAR BABY DOLL. In at least 2 songs on NEMESISTER, they tear her down, but I'm pretty sure they are on good terms today. Love has, from time-to-time contributed to their live performances, just as she has for many bands, from L7 to Echo and the Bunnymen, but she was never actually in the band.
Don't forget the Indigo Girls!
(Unless you hate folksy rocker chicks)
8)
Nooooooooooooo!
Try driving in a tiny little car for 4 days with a (now thankfully ex) girlfriend who played "Closer to Fine" on repeat.
I wish I could forget.
Oh dear goddess - I'd hate them too after that!
I think pretty much any song would get annoying if played on repeat for that long. Except for anything sung by my precious Duran Duran of course.
I couldnt decide wether to laugh, or punch you...lol
Meh, it REALLY wasnt her best preformance. Besides being hyped about actually seeing her, it wasnt a very good set. I would have been turned off too if it was my first ani experience.
Her voice can annoy me (esp in some of her newer stuff) but there is so much conviction behind it, it gets to me.
I loves me some ani, but to each thier own.
