I just wanted to share this website with everyone here. It's actually a companion to a book of the same name. They have alot of eye-opening quizes - Ambivalent Sexism, Test your Native IQ, Slide tour of Advertising Prejudice, Test yourself for hidden biases (Implicit Association Test)...There were alot of interesting readings on there. Yeah, I'm really glad I found this site. I took the native IQ test earlier and it really shook me up. Her a couple of interesting facts that (suprise, suprise) we were never taught in school.....
Approximately how many Natives in the Americas died within a century of Christopher Columbus' arrival?
Nearly 100 million -- roughly 95% of the population.
Within a few generations of their first encounter with Europeans, nearly all native people in the Western Hemisphere were exterminated. In terms of the number dead, the destruction of the Indians of the Americas ranks as the largest act of genocide in history.
Also, did you know that Native Americans are referred to as "merciless savages" in the American Decleration of Independence?
I knew all that ;) But I agree it's surprising how many people don't.
Someone made a joke about killing indians in an LJ community, and I nicely asked if she would refrain as I have family who were killed during the genocide, and she cracked a joke about "Uh, yeah, your family was alive in the 1700's, sure".
Most people don't even realize it didn't just end 300 years ago. The last residential school (where kidnapped native children were beaten, whipped, killed and raped) didn't even close until 1972.
Wow. Honestly, I am soo ignorant about native americans and everything that has happened to them. I would LOVE to learn more, to educate myself, since this type of thing they have never mentioned in school, of course!
It's so sad, a lot of people still remember being in those places. I had an uncle that was a canadian native. My grandparents adopted him from one of those horrible schools when he was about 12. He committed suicide at 21... unfortunately, I was a very small child and never got the chance to get to know him.
I took the hidden biases (Implicit Association Test) and it was actually very eye opening for me.
