I was just curious who gives their child or themsleves, milk and milk based products?
I don't drink milk becuase I just don't like it but I love yogurt and cottage cheese.
My daughter can't really handle milk, it gives her diareah so she gets rice milk.
Personally, I just think animal milk is gross becuase of all the chemiclas the animals ingest. Anyone else think like this or am I just paranoid?

I don't think dairy is really all that healthy for ANYONE.
My son and I both drink potato milk. We do have cheese now and then, but that's about it for dairy. I kind of treat it like junk food, not to be consumed that often, but okay once in a while.

I think you'd like that thread.
We drink organic milk but not a lot, mostly because we just don't love it. We use like 1/2 gallon a week and that includes what we use for cooking and baking. I worry about chemicals but this limits them, plus we're not a completely organic household or anything but getting better as we go.
We use soy milk. I buy cow's milk sometimes to cook with but that is very rare. We do eat dairy cheese.
I agree that cow's milk (or other animal milk) is really not that great for anyone!
My daughter won't drink the soy. I don't care for it either. I really like the rice milk though and it's organic so yay!
I really like vanilla rice milk as well, actually I prefer rice milk, but it's significantly more expensive than soy for some reason. My son prefers soy, I think because it's thicker.
I buy soy milk for myself.
But Lyric HATES any type of milk - she gags. So I just buy calcium-fortified stuff. I agree - animal dairy is GROSS.
I do still get WIC, but give the milk to friends. Lyric still eats dairy cheese.
I think dairy milk is gross. I like chocolate soy milk, but my mom thinks it is disgusting and won't buy it. *shrugs* I'll be 18 on Saturday and soon gone, I can buy my own stuff then.
I eat more cheese than one can ever imagine though. I eat cheese on EVERYTHING. Luckily, I have really low cholesterol (possibly because I don't like stuff like ice cream, steak...) I dunno. String cheese, cheese in tacos, cheese on pasta, fresh mozzarella on french bread, pizza, cheese sticks, cheesy bread.... anything cheese I will devour. Hehe.
We drink enriched vanilla rice milk, but we cook with dairy (organic as much as possible) and we eat cheese and yogurt. Some days, I pretty much live on brow cow cream top yogurt. mmmmmmmmm.
dairy is a condiment in our household.
we drink soy milk but still eat other dairy stuff. Actually only Eric drinks soy milk, I use it on my cereal but I dont ever drink it.
Why is it that animal milk isnt good for humans? I always got a stomach ache and I thought it was just me but I guess not.
Do some research on it. BD got really bad stomachaches from it and I think it's not good for someone at all...
Skykid if you go to the link I posted above it explains some of the reasons why dairy isn't that great.
I took my oldest son off of all milk based products about 4 months ago when we found out that an intolerance to the protein casein could cause symptoms of autism. We have noticed a huge change in his behaviour and abilities. If we accidentally give him something with milk in it, we know right away. He starts getting really hyper, and his behaviour changes. We gice him soy or rice milk (both of which he loves), soy yogurt and ice cream. If he has cupcakes, pancakes or anything that would normally contain milk, they have to be homemade with soy/rice milk. He can't have any cheese because any of the soy cheese we've found has casein in it. I feel bad because it's his absolute favourite food.
The rest of us use cows milk. I have an allergy to it, so I really shouldn't be having any, either. I'm sure that is why I've been so unhealthy lately. I would prefer that nobody in the family have animal milk, and I know that it's not very healthy, I'm just afraid that they won't get what they need from other food sources. I was brought up on soy, rice and goats milk because of my allergy, as well as a multi vitamin and calcium supplement, but I still wasn't getting the nutrition that I needed, nor a good amount of calcium.
I was allergic to cow's milk when I was a baby and it kinda stuck to me. I tried drinking it in junior high but EWWW... I couldn't. It was like, a psychological thing.
no milk, but so much cheese it might make some of you ill!
thanks that link has really good info.
Guess we are two peas in a pod then :D
I have that psychological thing with fish & seafood. I didn't eat it for 10 years because I had showed up positive for it on an allergy test, but now that I got negative on a second test, I still can't eat it. Its like not food to me anymore.
thats weird, something similar happened to me I ate some fish when i was young and I got really sick (i dont know if it was that particular meal or if i was allergic) but now I can never eat seafood without wanting to barf.
I won't drink milk at all. It's disgusting to me. I can't STAND how my SO's breath smells after he drinks it, either.
I will, however, eat cheese. All the time. I prefer soy yogurt and ice creams, though. My fave brand of soymilk is Silk.
When I was 13, I ate one of those Michelina's frozen dinner things-Swedish Meatball-and got vicious food poisoning. Now I can't eat any kind of frozen dinner ( except the Amy's organic brand for some reason ) without throwing up.
We do dairy at our house. I just can't get into soy products. If you compare the soy version to the dairy version of food like milk and yogurt, the soy versions generaly contain a lot more carbs (sugar), less protein, and less fat, which should be a good thing but it's not just the amounts of the nutrients we should look at but the balance between them as well.
(run on and rambly)
Not to bash soy, we just can't get into it at our house.
Besides, I am a cheese snob.
:P
Soy isn't the best source for calcium either, though.
The number one best sources for calcium are vegetables, things like kale, lentils, beans, etc.
Yum, I much prefer veggies over dairy or soy!
ok im gonna be me. i love milk, yup i said it. we go through a gallon a week at least. hell ill say this, i smoke , i dont think milk is my biggest worry.
oops forgot the rest of my post, my daughter drinks about 8 oz. a day of milk. her ped told me to up it.
We got addicted to organic milk when the idea of hormones, etc. began to gross me out. The taste is completely different and Costco sells it relatively cheaply.
Cae and I are vegan. Everynow now or then I'll say fuck it when something has casein or whey in it. We drink soy milk and calcium fortified orange juice and Cae drinks mama milk.
Vegan Gourmet is a brand with fairly decent no casein cheese..
Thank you. I'll have to see if I can find it. Cheese is his absolute favourite food, and he hasn't been able to have any in months.
no milk here either for us. i hate it its soo gross, and alexa never liked it so i dont bother giving it to her.
the only 2 things she drinks are water and apple juice (besides breastmilk)
Nuts & seeds are very rich sources of calcium & other minerals.
Cashew milk and almond milk are both more rich in calcium than cow or soy and very easy to make.
Unhulled tahini(the brown stuff, not the pale) is one of the best sources of calcium. Put some in stirfries or even add some to your kids peanut butter to dramatically increase the amount of calcium they get.
Dairy nauseates me. And literally makes me unwell.
When I stopped consuming dairy years ago I stopped getting acne, stomach aches and lost the dark circles under my eyes. Strangly I also went from a 22 day cycle to a 29 day cycle the very month I cut dairy.
My eldests speak got better, probably because his ears got clearer. His gut stopped being so troubled.
My youngest son recently cut dairy and no longer gets diahorreah.
In my 7 person household only my wife consumes dairy and she just has it with coffee.
