Is WIC worth it?

My WIC appt is on friday, and Im really starting to wonder if its even worth messing with. When i went to sign up for the appt they were shitty enough with me, and Ive heard so many horror stories about how those wic ladies treat people. Is WIC really worth the trouble if im going to breastfeed. My mom tells me to do it, and since im living here, i feel like i have no choice. But if the are rude to me friday, I highly doubt I will be going back.

I got an electric breast pump from wic that was worth almost 300 dollars. You get the largest food package available, as well. For me, wic was more than worth it.

And I wanted to add that everyone was really great to me, especially when they found out I was breastfeeding.

Hmmm, Thats interesting to know! I didnt think about them being a bit nicer about breastfeeding, but that does make sense.

same for me with the whole breastfeeding thing. not that the people were rude to me in anyway before i told them about my plans to breastfeed, but they were really receptive to the idea and were extremely supportive.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT??? DUDE...that is AWESOME!!! I wish I had know this because I already bought a breast pump...but it's still awesome! I live in Texas and my next appointment isn't until after my due date, but I wonder if they do this in every state!!!

If they're rude COMPLAIN!!! Find out who's in charge and keep on going up the chain of command until you find somebody that listens to you. They get paid to help you, if they aren't doing their job, the shouldn't have it. You should never have to put up with somebody treating you poorly.

IMO wic is really worth it. I am about 7 1/2 months pregnant and I get tons of food. Somtimes i find it even hard to use all the checks by the end of the month. The ladies that work in the office i go to are very nice and very supportive of me. The are also very happy that I am a teen and I am going to breastfeed. Like Pierre said if they are rude to you i would complain to someone.

Yeah, everyone was nice to me the whole time, but after they found out I was breastfeeding, they started really going out of their way to find things and do things and get things for me. I guess not a lot of women in my area do it, because I know one of the consultants went around telling everybody at the office "she's breastfeeding!!!" and finding everything she could possibly get to give to me. Soak pads, the pump, numbers to call for lac help. It was great.

I FF Lyric and got enough formula to last every month. And it helped a lot with juice & when she started solids. I am still on it ... the beans, juice & peanut butter are great. I usually give the milk, eggs & cheese to friends/family.

Is WIC worth it?

I almost walked out a WIC appointment last week because a nurse was being so nasty to me.

They wouldn't give me a breastpump. My SIL and I are the only boobie feeders we know locally. They wouldn't give her a pump either.

I guess you could make an abuse complaint against the nurse with the state dept of health...I've considered making a formal complaint against the nurse who's always mean to me.

I hated the people at WIC and all the crap they make you do but I loved the stuff they provided for me & my oldest when he was a baby/toddler.

I certified for WIC as part of my job when I worked in a public health clinic, and all the nurses I knew really went out of our way to help out BF moms as much as we could. Not all states fund breast pumps, though, which is a bummer. :( We had a couple of Lactinas as loaners that were always being used.

Do you have any idea which states do fund pumps? Or how to find out?

Really? Because when I was pumping (my son was a preemie) WIC did not offer free pumps.. they worked with medical assistance so I could rent one.. And this was just at the beginning of this year.

When did you get your pump and what kind was it (just curious).. I'm expecting my second and DETERMINED successfully breastfeed this one.

I think the easiest way would be to just ask at your first visit. WIC has a lot of local and state control, so it may also vary by local funding.

I think WIC is worth it, and they are supposed to give you a form that if you aren't happy with the way they treated you, you can send in the form and have them evaluated.

Is WIC worth it?

my son and i have been receiving wic since i was about 5 mos pregnant and i have never had a problem with a consultant. they are always very helpful and cooperative, though a bit... rushed, but im sure that is because their time must be managed well, with the fact that they are a public service and have many clients. when i was having problems breast feeding when my son was first born, they set me up with a lactation specialist, who helped me a lot and let me borrow one of those big, amazing expensive breast pumps. when we switched to formula, my son always had some left over at the end of the month. we still get plenty of food and when we started receiving the solid food, we were left with like 3 big cans of formula. i am happy with wic, no doubt. i think they are even one of the better programs, because there is not a lot of red tape associated with their assistance, and they have always tried to help me in whatever way they can. (and now my favorite thing about wic is honey bunches of oats. hehe)
