Mine is graco w/ a base that stays in the car. It is pretty light weight and we really like it. I comes with built in head support which was great for when we put him in it for the first time.
My daughter's is the same car seat that the previous poster described; Graco w/ a base that stays in the vehicle that the car seat slips right into and has a built in head support. I highly recommend it if you can find one. The built in base is especially nice to have because you don't have to fumble with the seat belt every time you go somewhere.

yes rear -facing. I also recommend that if you are short on money and your kid grows fast get a carseat that is convertable it is rearfacing up to 35 lbs and goes forward at either one year or after they exceed 35 lbs. Otherwise you will end up buying two seperate ones. the infant carrier ones are great for newborns and i loved mine but monster baby was 23 lbs at 6mths i had to go buy another one.(after 20 lbs it no-longer safe)
I'm thinking this should be in pregnancy and birth as well as a resource link. When I first had Trey I didn't even KNOW there were different types of car seats, let alone ones just for infants. I got a front facing car seat from a friend, and that one was what was in the hospital when we left. Nurses didn't even check like they're supposed too. They just asked if we had one, we said yes, they said did you install it correctly, we said that we did, and we went on our merry way. We didn't even know it was the wrong one, we just put a neck support in it and then drove Trey home in that (THANK GOD we were not in an accident, I can't believe I was so ignorant as to have done that). Once we got home I told Shawn that the car seat looked too big for Trey and couldn't we splurge and get a nice new one? So we read the size limitations then and realized it wasn't for infants at all.
We felt like such idiots, but that very second Shawn went and got the rear facing infant Graco with the detachable base. When we got our stroller later too, it hooked into the Graco stroller so we could just switch it from base to stroller very easily, I loved it.
