I buy all of my clothing second hand... except underwear. I go like once a year to GAP or Victoria's Secret and buy bras and panties. I hate supporting sweat shop labor, but all the special sweat shop free underwear is so expensive and fits funny. Also you have to buy it online so you can't really tell what it's gonna be like. Do ya'll have any alternatives?

I'm not sure if Old Navy uses sweatshops...but I know they have underwear. Maybe try Mountain Equipment Coop? I don't know if there are any where you are, but often times they use recycled cotton for their clothes and underoos....someone feel free to correct me on this if I'm wrong!
I think Old navy does use sweatshops. I thought they were owned by the same corporation as the Gap?
That's what I heard.
Old Navy is sweat shop for sure. Next time you go in look st he tags. They are for about forty different third world countries.
yes they are, gap, old navy and banana republic are all owned by Gap inc.
So, are there any places that are known for NOT supporting sweat shops?
I'll try and find some and post them if I can.
Does anyone know any off the top of their head?
Okay, I have to say it: You could go commando ;)
Other than that, I am no help. I'm sorry.
Salvation army and goodwill sell underware. You can't always find good stuff, but you definitely stumble upon goldmines once in a while.
It may just be me but I'd feel odd in used underwear. Just like I don't like it when people use my bathtowels or loofah, it's just something I don't think I could do.
How about checking out local shops? That is what I do.
yeah, it totally depends on your personal comfort level. Most of my underwear is handed down from friends. I guess I feel like if I can wash my baby's poop filled diapers to the point where I'm comfortable using them again I can get another woman's underweaar clean enough to where I can wear it.
what is loofah, btw?
Yeah, ya know.. some roommates wash off and share sex toys.
I've always bought my underwear new. But, now that I think about it, Assuming the underwear was clean and not stained, I can't really see much wrong with buying second hand. I always throw the stuff I buy second hand in the wash before I wear anyways. I mean, if it's all you can afford, go for it. Don't feel bad about it. Do what you gotta do!
There are sometimes little shops that will sell local, made with love skivvies.
And yes, GAP, Old Navy and Banana Republic are all owned by the same holding company. There is a good article here about the way they work.
http://www.globalenvision.org/library/8/639/
it says in that article that gap is getting praise from anti-sweat shop groups and working to improve conditions....
You're not alone, I feel the same way.
A loofah:

so thats a loofa hey? we have those things all over the place here. I always called it that ball-spongy-thingy hahaha. I never knew what it was called.
I could go commando but I lOVE cute underwear
I go commando :D I love cute underwear too, but I think it's too expensive for something that's just gonna be lodged up your crack 8) So even if I go shopping and grab a bunch that I like, I'll end up putting them back by the time I check out anyway....
Im the same way. I really like lacy panties *sigh* , but they dont serve a purpose and I much prefer commando.
Yes, it does say that and it is true. The probelm is that the only reason it is currently appearing to shift on their sweatshop stance is the HUGE pressure placed on it's holding company by ethical bankers, activists and the global fair trade comitte.
Too little too late if you ask me.
A couple of google searches came up with these results:
http://nosweatapparal.com
their motto is %100 union made apparal. They claim to be totally sweat shop free. I'm pretty sure they carry underware.
http://www.outspokenclothing.com/cafepress/
mostly t-shirts and things, but has some underwear. no idea if they are sweat shop free or not, but they seem pretty aware, so I bet they'd respond well to emails asking them about it.
just chiming in.. im a total commando girl
Lol, I have been using those for year, and didn't know what to call them. What I usually say, sounds very much like what you just said.
I was always under the impression that a loofa was a sea sponge. I guess there are just different types.
About the used underwear, I can see how that would make someone uncomfortable. I once saw a girl on T.V who had a stellar idea. She made a biz of purchasing old swimsuits from Goodwill, replacing the crotch, then designing them.
Oh and about going comando, I love it. I feel so free :D I don't do it as often anymore, because I can't re-wear my pants without washing them, if you know what I mean. Lol.
http://www.mushycat.com
It's one guy, totally non-sweatshop, and he's got panties! And t-shirts, and buttons, and stickers. He's all feministy too, I love this site. I don't remember what he charges for panties, but I bet he'd cut a deal if you were buying a bunch.
Checked his site, boy briefs are $10, thongs are $9. And they come with cute sayings like "Let's switch gender roles!" and "feminists do it better."
kinda off topic but i love that last site, i just bought a bunch of stuff for like ten bucks- no undies though.
cool thanks, it's a bit pricy, but it's a start.
