Climbing out of Crib

My daughter is only 12 and a half months old, so really I didnt expect her to be doing this!! She is tall for her age, 32 inches, but still!!! I have removed the bumpers, and even took out the little stuffed animal that she used to sleep with in hopes that those things were giving her a step up. BUT NO!!! The crib we have is lowered all the way, the rail is always up and its practically brand new so its up to all safety standards.

Somehow she is managing to hoist herself up in one of the corners and toss her leg over, luckily the 4 times shes done this in the past week I was peaking in through her doors because i was suspicious of her being so quiet. No falls yet, but any moment now. I mean, its not easy for her to climb out, she has to work at it pretty hard, but its definately possible!!!

So what do I do?? Its to early for a toddler bed right??? Anyone else had this problem??

I think if she's learned how to climb out, it's just the right time for a toddler bed.

We kept T in his crib until he was 2, but only because he hadn't ever learned how to climb out by himself.

I think it would be okay to switch.

The one thing i worry about is her ability to get up in the middle of the night if she is in a toddler bed. But i guess once shes an expert on escaping from her crib ill be facing the same thing.

the room is fully baby-proofed, any further precautions i need to take?

I second the toddler bed idea. Maybe put some pillows or mats down on the floor by the crib so if she falls climbing down, at least she's protected.

I'd go with the toddler bed, too. I mean, if she's going to climb out, there's nothing you can really do about it. At least in a toddler bed she's much closer to the ground.

If you do the toddler bed, and when she figures out how to open the door, I would recommend a baby gate for her room. Maybe even sooner, so you can stick her in her room with the door open when you need to.

Once she can get the bedroom door open, if you have a baby gate, you wont have her wandering around the house in places she shouldn't be.

Can you just put her crib matress or a single matress on the floor in her room?

There wouldn't be any risk of falling out and she can get in and out easily so she will feel in control which I think is important. I also second the baby gate idea.

If you are concered about moving a 12 1/2 month old into a toddler bed so soon, you can purchase a crib tent. It does cost some money, and having to zip and unzip can be a pain in the butt, but its a safe way to keep infants in their cribs.

We just purchased one for Kade. We don't have the room for a toddler bed, and I'd know he'd get up in the middle of the night and wander around. So far it's been smooth sailing.

the toddler bed sounds like a good idea.....we had this ting that slid under the matrace (sp?!?!) an acted like a wall to keep kiddo IN the bed...it was about 3/4 of the side, so scooching around it an falling out wasn't a problem. it's got a screen-type thing so they can still see though the *tiny* holes, but It's strong enough to hold me without dropping me to the floor ^^

I had one of those tucked under his mattress on the floor, Hylian.

Really, they don't need a bed frame, the mattress alone works great.
