my letter to the editor

I've been posting a lot of the opinion section of my paper lately. Abortion has really taken its place in the headlines around here. So I decided to write a letter to the editor. Here it is.

http://www.recordonline.com/archive/2006/05/15/opinion-15opedlettersmon-05-15.html

and heres my letter

Readers comment on abortion

In response to the articles on abortion lately, including Beth Quinn's articles, I have to say I'm happy to see this issue pushed into our local media. As someone who experienced an unplanned pregnancy at 19, I can relate. And I'm not the only one.

According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, almost 1 million teenage girls become pregnant each year. As of 1996, four in 10 of those pregnancies ended in abortion. Most young people weren't around to remember a time when we didn't have that option. We need to stand up and fight to keep that option. Not only for teenagers who become pregnant, but for all women who are placed in the same position that I and many other woman are in each year.

While I continued my pregnancy, I can say I'm a mother by choice. I want to make sure that other women have that same choice in the years to come.

Thumbs up to your letter..

and WOW at the final Letter to the Editor on that page:

Quote:
My, oh my, was I shocked to see Clare Coleman's letter stating that Planned Parenthood should be considered as an "abortion alternative." As the president/CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Mid-Hudson Valley, she must know that the No. 1 provider of abortions in our country is Planned Parenthood.

Ask Coleman what is the No. 1 sexually transmitted disease among our college students and she would have to answer HPV. The human papilloma virus is spread skin to skin; a condom does nothing to prevent this rampant STD that has left our girls with cervical cancer and infertile for life.

As the mother of seven children, 22, 20, 18, 15, 12, 9, and 7 years of age, I know of no greater predator than this destructive and immoral organization.

The whole agenda is simple. More sexually active kids yield more customers for contraception and abortions. Basically, your child is indoctrinated and robbed of innocence because of the need to build their customer base.

For more than three decades, Planned Parenthood has become an evil empire built on taxpayer dollars on the federal, state and county levels. I would suggest that all women refuse to enter a Planned Parenthood facility because you will contribute to the millions in profit that has caused the agony of many of our youth. There is no condom for the heart.

I don't even know where to start. I sincerely hope Clare Coleman sends a letter in response.

Oh, I just love this. What does being a mother of seven children have to do with knowing how "immmoral" PP is? Did they camp out on her lawn while she was pregnant, or sneak into her house at night to try to perform a stealth abortion?

Nice letter.

This one I found absurd:

Quote:
There is a lot of talk about abortion. Of course, abortion is wrong. But many of you will tell me that since I am a man and I have no womb, I should not be allowed to make decisions about abortion.

Meanwhile, some of you try to prevent me from owning guns, while you have none of those either. Isn't it called hypocrisy?

so...i have to own a gun to prove people shouldn't own guns?

Why do they teach they teach the chimpanzees to write? I know it amuses the zookeepers, but they need to keep the letters to themselves.

ahaha, sometimes... i just don't understand, the metaphors that men use to talk about abortion.

I was having a discussion with my dad about it recently, and he isn't 100% anti-choice, but he might as well be because he talks about women having an abortion, the same way he talks about someone throwing out a pop can instead of recycling it! - - UHH....

so, i wanted to bring this up because i don't know if anyone knows how this has been argued in the anti-choice/pro-choice debate.

Like, government incentives ie: money for choosing to go through with your pregnancy and plan an adoption?

I just had never heard anyone bring that up before. And I'm curious if anyone has ever heard of anything like that happening...

Wow. Paying women to plan an adoption? That's a new one on me. I do like your letter to the editor. Gutsy and eloquent. :)
