Julians about 5 1/2 months now, and we have recently stopped swaddling him. It takes him about 2-30 minutes to flail until he falls asleep. Well recently, he decided he dosnt like his back anymore...and is side sleeping. We go in, replace him to his back, and then he 5 mins later, hes back on his side.
Does anyone know when its safe to let them do this? I really cant be going in there every 10 mins all night...soo if its not safe....what do i do to keep him on his back. (he HATES his sleep positioner)

Kenna was a side sleeper from the beginning, still is, and she's fine. Every time I turned her on her back, she'd turn back on her side just like you said he does.
I thought it was safe once they were able to actually turn themselves away if they needed to...?
yeah I think it is safe once they can turn to their side. I know Eric moves around so much in his sleep that its nuts!
Side sleeping is safe from the very beginning. The problem is, with a very young baby, you can't KEEP them on their sides without some type of support. The rule of whether to keep baby on tummy or back has changed at least once in the past 20-30 years, so side sleeping is a happy medium.

can help keep a young baby from rolling over.
I wouldn't worry too much. The chance of SIDS occurring after the baby can move on his own drops drastically. Healthy babies are usually considered "out of the woods" by 6 months.
i swaddled my little girl and with the aid of recieving blankets and put her on the side. once your child can turn over, its point less to keep turning them back because they will roll and roll some more. your child may roll on their side but then back to their back. once they can roll by themselves its ok to let them sleep how they want to.
good to hear!!! I dont know why he wanted to sleep on his side soo badly....hes ALWAYS slept on his back.....he looks soo cute on his side though, he sleeps the exact way i do!
Morgan sleeps on her side and i worried about her at first but its ok now. I bought this wedge at Target, it suppose to be used for many things (breastfeeding, sleeping, playing) but i put her to sleep on it. It eases my mind.
My daughter slept on her side from the very beginning. I'd lay her down on her back, but when I'd go back in to check on her, she'd be on her side. Don't worry, once they can roll over on their own, the chance of SIDS greatly decreases.
I used rolled blankets and things to keep N on his back for about the first month. He hated being swaddled after about a month as well...he'd wiggle until he kicked his feet out no matter how tight i wrapped him. After about a month or 2 he started rolling over and sleeping on his stomach/side no matter what i did. He sleeps best on his stomach/side and i've never had any problems. i only had problems when i tried to force him to sleep on his back.
