Both my boys did this around that age and my six year old still sometimes does. They would only do it in their sleep though, they grew out of it and my denstist never said anything about visible damage.
my 5 year old does it in her sleep and has for a few years. your dentist can make a mouth guard that they can wear at night that will stop them from grinding there teeth. i am hoping to get one made for my kiddo soon.
uuughghgh kiddo used to do that - especially while teething. He doesn't seem to do it anymore (he's 5 now) but just reading about it gave me chills. that noise is the -worst-

ack! my sister did this all the time (I SWEAR it was just to irk me) She did stop on her own, though
