Well today I went for my 37 week check up and was shocked too find out that I had Group B Strep...... The doctor acted like it was nothing but when I got home and read up on it was surprised to find out just how harm full it could be on the baby hen being born.. The way they treat this thing is by penicillin (sp?) and I am very allergic to this so they have another antibiotic they treat it with. the only way that the antibiotic works is if you get it 4-6 hours before your water breaks and when your contractions are no closer than 5- 6 minutes apart.... If you donât get the anti biotic quick enough than the baby can get group B strep and could potentially develop meningitis and possible die... This freaked the shit outta me and am concerned as to why the obgyn just brushed it off like it was a simple bacterial infection like vaginosis... If this this is as serious as it sound why wouldnât they break my water due to the fact the I am full term and greatly reduce the potential risk that this bacteria could cause the fetus cause I guess when your water breaks the fetus is exposed to everything bad ... sorry this is kind of long but it really pisses me off because I wanted to have a home birth and too find out that I have to rush to the hospital when I feel contractions and get an IV inserted really ruins what I had dreamed my labor being. Have any of you ladies had group b strep? I also hear that you have to stay in the hospital longer so that they can monitor your baby for 48-72 hours after birth? arggggg im just so pissed off. If its not fights with the bd .. Getting uncomfortably big... have stretch marks spread all over my body.. only managing to get up to 6 hours of sleep a night and being completely bored and anxious wit being prego its all this other medical bullshit to worry about it seems like this is never going to end... sorry for the rant im just having a really bad day

I have group b strep. My doctor also brushed it off like nothing because the chances are like 1 in a 300,000. and they have all the antiboitics to treat it . Yes, your suppose to stay 72 hours to see if the baby has it . But your the mom, and can sign him out whenever you want. Also you can have a home birth. If you already have a midwife or doula they also should have the antiboitic, or you really dont even need it if you want it all natural.
You can still have a homebirth ( at least here you can ). It takes less than 20 minutes to run the antibiotics. You go to the hospital in labour, they give you the antibiotics, then you can go back home. That might not be a possibility where you are, but that's what my midwives told me.
Inducing you at 37 weeks could potentially have a negative effect on the fetus. Group B strep isn't an emergency.
what i read is that if i dont get the antiobotic treatment in time and give birth without it than the baby has a 1 in 200 chance of getting it.... if i do get the natibiotic in time that i have a 1 in 4000 chance in passin it on to the baby...... i never heard of one in 300,000 but if that the chances than i feel a little bit better...... you see i dont have a doula or a mid wife i just wanted to stay at home as long as possible due to the fact that i am like literally 2 min away from the hospital... welli feel alittle bit better today i was just really fighting with bd and on like no sleep thanks for the support
I also have group b strep. I was really upset when I found out, because I had never ever heard of it before, and it really worried me once I found out what it can do...
But, I can tell you this.....
My antibiotics were not put in at the right time, therefore didnt work...
My son had to stay in the NICU for a week, but they dont know what really happened to him....but he turned out absolutely fine.
Now hes a 10 month old, active, extremely healthy baby...
I hope the same goes for you :)
I had that group b strep and I didn't even get the antibiotics during labor because she was born 20 minutes after arriving at the hospital. We didn't have any complications and I don't remember anybody being concerned.
It's not an infection. It's a normal bacteria that some women carry in the vagina and/or rectum, but everyone has in their upper GI. It's really not a big deal. With first babies, you will have time to be treated, almost certainly, and if not, it's a bit of a PITA (your baby will have blood draws done and vital signs checked every few hours), and they might make you stay 48 hours (never heard of 72 -- eek!) but it's fine. GBS is very, very treatable, in you and in the baby if needed.
