so i mentioned in another thread that lucy was going to be charlie chaplin for halloween, because i know no one else will dress their baby as that and we won't have to spend a lot of money on her costume.
the thing is, though, that when i was talking to the people who work at her preschool, No one knew who he was! i thought he was a really well-known cultural icon, so it was a big surprise to me.
now i'm wondering if i should still dress her has that since both me and my SO know who she would be dressed as. but then. what if she gets there and everyone thinks i dressed my kid as hitler? because they've never heard of charlie chaplin and they just recognize the moustache. she goes to a baptist preschool and there is a jewish boy in her class, so it would be pretty much detrimental if someone, ANYONE, thought that.
what do you think?

I would still dress her like that, maybe somehow make it obvious that she is not hitler... I don't know how you would do that but there must be some difference between hitler and charlie chaplin! And tell her daycare providers too... I'm sure most people woudln't think that you dressed your kid as hitler.
That is weird that they don't know who Charlie Chaplin is. I thought he was as well know as say Whinnie the Pooh or Mickey Mouse. I think a mini Charlie Chaplin would be cute especially if she could do a little miming. I think she would only look like Hitler if she had the red/white/black swastika symbol on her.
I can't believe they'd never heard of Charlie Chaplin! Wow. That's all I have to say on that. I would still dress her as him though. He normally wore a tophat right? I'm pretty sure I've never seen a picture of Hitler in a tophat.
What a sad revelation. I think going for Chaplin is still a good idea. Surely someone will at least recognize the outfit and say "OH YEAH! That guy!" since his face is pretty well known. Maybe it's the name that is getting people stuck.
