I'm really not digging the stereotyping of how a native looks like throughout this thread. Regardless of if you have a distant great cherokee grandma or if you're full, you should know enough to know that to stereotype a native's looks is still not right.
Most people do it with the pocahontas version in head, the high cheekbones, dark skin, dark eyes, dark hair. When really, that's just not accurate.
I agree with you on that. However, my mom is a former Native History high school teacher, and they have a textbook that has no particular description on how a real First Nations person looks, but it says this is stereotyped because of when Christopher Columbus came. If you think about it, we are not even supposed to be called "Indians". The proper names are really "Native American" or "Aboriginal", "Anicinabe" - which means "Man was lowered from above". When we were first labelled as "indians", it was because C.C was looking for the indians of INDIA, not North America.
Haha word, I think this board knows how much I detest the word Indian, not only because it's inaccurate but because it's been used as a slur against our people forever and does not recognize that this is our land like native, first nation or aboriginal does.
At school around Thanksgiving my daughter came home and was telling me how they were learning about Pilgrims and "Indians." I tried to explain to her that it's Native Americans and that she is part Native American as well. I'm not sure how much she comprehended it all.
I would like to take her to a Pow Wow to expose her to that side of her culture, but I never seem to hear about them in my area until they're already over with.
ugh. I detest Thanksgiving becuase it foruses on the whole story...from the european side. THat one rates up there with columbus day
I also hate the word "Indian" It IS inaccurate and it annoys the crap out of me!
Since I'm posting anyways, I'm Irish, German, Spanish, Hungarian, Scottish, Polish, incapable of spelling and that combo make me very VERY pasty white  I've got blue eyes and blonde hair. My sisters (the same combo as me) HAae blone and brown air and bye and green eyes.
Any future babies of mine are goign to have more scottish and irish (my favorite part of me!) and lebonese.
Similar to the "indian image" it's really though to deal with people when they hear seff's full name (Youssef Khalil...) The terrorist-middle eastern stereotype is driving us nuts! He's about as pale as me with brown hair and lt. brown eyes, so everyone thinks he's great and all, but hen they hear the name istead of just his nickname and they loose it
I love his name and I love the culture (and the food!) that his family preserves durring family get togethers (like holidays). He comes from a line of men who name their firstborn son the same name as themselves, but flipped. I mean, when me and Youssef Khalil have a son, his name will be Khalil Youssef. My grandson from Khalil will be named Youssef Khalil etc etc...I like the name, but I can understand if any one of my decendant doesn't want to do it. It's not up to us, it's up to them. :D

Yessir! Amen, sistah! 8)
Idk, I was never a fan of the word, "Indian" either. We are not from India!

You should take her! Pow Wows are fun, and they are just full of so much cultural energy. My baby goes into the circle without his costume and he just dances like nuts, lol.
Maybe think about saving up for a lil raod trip and go to North Dakota. There are always lots of Pow Wows there every summer! We might even go after I have this second baby. 8)

BD's side of the family all lives on the Pine Ridge rez in South Dakota, so I should take her out there this next summer to visit when they have their Pow Wow. But I'm only going if BD's not there. He currently lives in Ohio and hopefully stays there.

Yeah! There ya go! As long as BD isn't there to make you feel bad or anything, I say, go hard! You'll enjoy it too. They have little stands where you can buy native jewellry and food. It's really fun, kinda like a lil carnival, but it's not. :)
I wanted to go this year, and I was in kamloops when it was happening but we were running late and on our way to Merritt :(
I don't get to take part too often in my own culture, I'm babine carrier from BC, and obviously I live a province away so I can't get there too much, but I'm friends with a lot of the tsuu tina people here so I usually just go to the powwows n rounddances here. I'm getting my baby into tradish dancing next year.
My baby has an outfit. He's still too small for it though. His leggings are still too long on him, and his headdress, or the little band that goes around his head is too big also. :(
Heh, I have nooo clue how to make regalia, which is why I'm very happy that the people who teach the kids how to dance also have a separate room to help the parents make regalia, because I'm soooo not a crafty person.

You can just buy them, or if you have someone in your family who knows how to make outfits, the more, the better! My baby has his own starblanket too. It's beautiful, and usually, my kookum makes us pay, even if it's for family, but it was for Cae, my first son, so she gave it to me at my baby shower. Her blankets run from anywhere from $100- $1200!!!!
Oh, and I made my own Jingle Dress. They are the EASIEST outfits to make, aside from Shawl Dance Dresses. All you do is shape the tin jingles, and sew them onto the dress. Sometimes, you can just buy the pieces for the dress, and sew on the jingles, and voila! You got a Jingle Dress! You don't have to be super crafty either!

Very very true... and it's not a true word at all. I love when this is brought up! I wish more people would realize this, too.
normally i would go down my family tree but since my childs father doesnt have an oppurtunity to know his familys roots, im just gonna stick with my government assigned label, im white and my child is half black half white.
I'm mostly Austrian, but also have Irish, French, and small amounts of other northern European ancestry. I have blonde hair, blue eyes, and very very pale skin with some light freckles.
Sophia's dad is 90% italian- but resembles Northern Italians in that he is very pale too (although he tans). He had brown hair with reddish tones and chocolate eyes. He's the only person I have ever met who is as pale as I am. The other 10% is Polish.
Sophia is a good mix, too! She is very pale, but more olive than I. She has hazel eyes and dark blonde hair with strawberry tones. I hope she got the tanning gene from her dad. A tan for me is pink- literally. I don't think I have any tanin pigment.

I'm boring just german and irish. Jeremy's dad's side is 100% german. His moms side how lots of differnt things. So Navy is german and Irish and little bit of other things mixed in. :D
Hm, I am a lot of nationalities. I am Russian, Lithuanian, Polish, and English on my moms side, and on my dads side I am Irish and French. Also I am Jewish although I don't celebrate the religion, my moms side of the family is Jewish and my mom was raised as Jewish, she convereted to christianity as an adult. Eric is everything I already said plus German and Mexican, bd is Polish, German and Mexican.
I'm a bunch of things! From my mom's side I am German, Irish, Spanish, Cherokee Indiana, Polish, and Lithuanian, and my dad is only Filipino.
Dh is Scottish, Welsh, and Cherokee.
So if you put all those together, you have my daughter, whose physical features are pretty well blended for everything that she is... very light tan, light brown eyes, and possibly dark hair, she needs to grow a little more before we can tell.

BD is adopted, but his records state his bio-parents ethnicities were West German, Polish, and Scottish/Irish/English.
So that makes the kiddo pretty Celtic.
