Someone made me a maya wrap. I can't figure out how to get her in it in some way so that supports her head. Any advice? I watched the video on the maya wrap site, but I still can't figure it out.
Just a thought to bring up, I know a few mayan girls who are really sick of these "maya wraps".
As feminists especially, why do we support products made by white folks who incorporate or profit directly from customs that come from particular POC groups? (Or just make up customs entirely and attribute them to certain groups)
I'm not getting it. Do we have Black people wraps?
No? So why is it okay that everywhere I go, even in progressive anti racist communities, no one thinks twice about using products called maya wraps or native slings?
Put her in it so your chest to chest and snug it up as tight as possible.. pull the favric up over her head and it should be well supported. Thats how I wore both my babies as newborns in my mayawrap. I hope that makes sense to you..
For some reason I thought that mayawraps were named after the creator's child or something..her name being Maya. I must have made that up though. (Like how Robeez were created by a woman with a son named Robbie)
Anyways, I didn't get my wrap til Gavin was older, but if you curl your babe up on your chest couldn't you put the top line of fabric at neck level and pull it tight enough to be snug? Although I think that when babe's awake, you'll have to do some supporting with your hand if they're looking around until they get better neck control. I think. Maybe not? Maybe you don't have to if you figure out a trick.
I have a Momo, which is similar. I never pulled the cloth over his head, because it had a pillowy bar that sat at the back of his neck to give support. I would tighten the inner part as tight as possible, put him up against my chest frog-style, pull the inner part up, and tighten the outer part. Then, I would tighten the middle by pulling between the edges of the tail.
I hope that makes sense....kind of confusing in text!
They're called maya wraps because they're made of fabric from guatemala and the products are made in guatemala, and guatemala has the largest mayan popluation of any country. At least the mayan people who made yr sling get paid an okay amount and are over 16 and it's not a sweat shop factory, but still, they're capitalizing on the backs of POC and using the name of their people to advert their stuff, and the majority of profits go to white folks. (As well as the majority of users of the product are white folks.) I just don't see why the mayan twist to it, except to appeal to the new age hippies, "oh not only is it diverse but look we give them a little bit of charity too!" (they have feel good pictures on their website of little POC kids that have benefitted from their charity. And yes it's good that they do the charity, and I imagine the rain collecting tanks are really useful, but it seems less like charity and more like a play on the company's "diversity" in an attempt to sell more and to make up for the exploitation for profit of a culture) The workers are paid more then most companies pay for foreign work, but is it still a fair wage? Is it what they'd pay the white people in the US who would work for them, or is it just enough to get out of sweatshop status? who knows? They don't publish that information, just say "don't worry, we pay them fairly" but really, with all this work and the exploitation of the culture who do you think gets the majority of profit? The white folks who run the business.
This isn't a feel good grassroots company, maya wraps are huge, this is a large business, who play on the feel good grassroots shit to sell their product, because like any large business they are in it for profit, a profit which is made on the backs of the POC who make the product and selling them as 'maya wraps'.
It says on the site that the creator came up with the idea of the wraps herself by playing around with what worked and what didn't, it seems more like after she started selling them a bit they came up with a plot of what would target the new age hippie attachment white mother group even more, and that is badabing, diversity, pick an aboriginal group and market them for what it's worth.
You could just call it a Ring Sling if you want? That want i call all of my slings that are adjustable. Do you have any pictures? I might be able to help you a little bit better if i could what you were doing. :D

(deep breath)
oh and yeah, a lot of mayans? really don't like it.
Is there an alternative name for that style of sling? As I said, a friend made the sling for me, so it has nothing to do with that company.
