Any reason not to give kids tea?

I really like regular ice tea and I'm trying to wean myself away from diet soda, so we have a big pitcher in the fridge. Maddie really likes it too, and I like that she's into something that's not very sweet - I don't want her to start craving sweet drinks constantly, but I was wondering if there was any reason for her NOT to drink it? Like the caffiene(sp?) or something? It's regular tea, with just enough sugar not to be bitter, and she drinks about 1 1/2 cups of it a day. Oh, she's almost 4.

I think the caffiene would be the only thing I'd be a bit concerned about...

She'll come to need it, like an adult does..... and will feel withdrawl when she doesn't have it right.....

Could you make a decaf tea?

I drank Lipton Decaf through most of my pregnancy, and it's not bad... the taste aspect is still there....... and there's still some caffiene.

Tea has some kind of bacteria that can cause UTI's, at least thats what I've been told, so I'd worry because of that. However, my kids and I get UTI's a LOT (so far this year I've had umm 4), so we don't drink it. However if you give her decaf tea, I think it should be fine, just don't let her have too much because of the bacteria thing.

I suppose it depends on the type of tea. If you are giving her plain old Orange Pekoe, you might reconsider because of the caffeine. How about an herbal type? Iced chamomile? Peppermint? I know that the majority (with some exceptions) of herbal teas are safe for children.

I totally forgot about the herbal tea option.... My Mom makes great Rooibos iced tea.. she adds a bit of lemon too, it's awesome.

The caffine and sugar is really what you have to worry about. The tea itself won't give you a UTI its too much caffine and not enough water. Just get caffine free type. They make some really awesome ones like apple cinnamon that are naturally sweet on their own. Ian loves hot Chamomille tea with milk and a little sugar.

In Germany they have tea that you can give babies. Suppose to help with tummy aches and stuff. So I was told. My family sent me some from over there and my kids seemed to like it a lot. Smells yum too

tea is a natural diaretic meaning it will cause your body to flush out water. so basically tea is not refreshing because the more you drink the more dehydrated you get. i live in the south and mothers give their babys sweet tea in bottles. if you wouldnt give soda pop than you shouldnt give tea ( im not talking about herbal decaf tea's altho im pretty sure decaf is bad for you because tea naturally contains caffine, i heard they have to add a chemical to tea to take out the caffine, same with decaf coffee) im gonna look it up and ill add the links for you

I think beyond like black or green tea, most teas are naturally decaf. If you're getting a good peppermint tea, it's just peppermint leaves, you know? And peppermint tea is so yummy...
