You should make an appointment to see a psychiatrist. When you go in, tell them what you're going through. Don't tell them what you think your problem is; let them tell you. That's what they're being paid for. They'll recommend medication if they think you need it. If they don't, they won't offer. If you can avoid it, you should really try to stay off of antidepressants.
I went to a regular doctor. I told him everything that was going on and asked him what i needed to do. He told me that he could put me on meds or if i felt i needed to see a psychiatrist he would recommend one. I knew that i needed more than just talking to someone, i knew i needed to try something so he wrote me a prescription.
i am having a hard time finding a doctor that our insurance will cover which is my problem. i only have seen our PCP once and it was because I had a terrible UTI and I had to go. Sooooo well thanks and I guess I am going to have to work on finding someone...
Your PCP can prescribe antidepressants. Make an appointment and go. You should probably also find a Psychologist or Social Worker that your insurance can cover because meds + therapy tend to be the best combination. It helps to have someone to talk to, and seeing a therapist usually makes sure that folks stay focused on getting better.
Usually psychiatrists are too busy to really talk with their patients, and they aren't all that necessary for simple anti-depressants, unless you find that you're having trouble finding something that works, or need a different kind of medication.
this site supports mamas of all kinds: including mamas surviving depression. saying things like, 'its best to stay off of antidepressants' invalidates the fact that many moms on this site THRIVE because of meds.
meds can be the difference beteween being barely making it, where everyday is a struggle to get through & fucking rocking out your days!
meds don't change your personality. meds often provide a ray of hope that allows your own brain chemistry & personality to return.
the "best practice"in battling depression in terms of most often having long term sucesses is a combo of meds & talk/behaviorial therapy. yr doc should be able to recommend a good starting place for you. finding good professionals, who support you where yr at, is important!
Thanks rebex....I just started taking anti-depressants and when I read that a few days ago I was like, well I must have failed or something....ya know, like I had to give in or something. I just thought I was over-reacting.
Anyway, jenni, you're regular doctor will be able to talk to you and give you a prescription. Good luck....I think they can really help.
