We have Mice (yes, plural as in more than one mouse!!!!!)

I feel like it never ends.We had a mold problem where we are, which is cleared up for now- thanks to the drop in temperature and using the heat, I am sure. But now we have mice. I saw one last night run the length of the backsplash in the kitchen, at like 11:30pm. So what did I do? I came on GM and looked up the old threads on mice and the methods you all have used. I took my tired, sick ass out to Walmart (only thing open) and bought the paraphenalia. How sick are these things?!?! Like, so so so gross. I bought some of those plug in deterrents that emit high freguency waves that only animals can hear. But, they were expensive. And after we plugged them in, in the kitchen, I heard scratching in my bedroom walls. Sick. So what, so I have to plug them in every room in the house? We also set out traps and caught one this morning. I can't go into details about it, I feel so upset about the whole situation. I feel upset we have them in the first place (it feels like we have a problem apartment, but I don't want to deal with a move again). Plus, I feel like it's our fault we have them, even thought it's natural for them to seek warmth and food in the cold. I had to throw out so much dry storage food last night, I feel like shit. And speaking of shit- their dropping were all over my counters, I just feel sick to my stomach. And although the mice creep me out, I don't want to hurt/kill them. So landlord is coming over today, I hope, to try to find how they're getting in. I just want them out. There is always something!

Oh no. I have zero advice, but I just want to say I'm sorry your apartment keeps having problems. I hope you get rid of them ASAP.

be careful mice droppings carry some virus (the name escapes me) but use gloves and a face mask when picking them up. I live in a little bitty town and like 10 people have died from it! We had mice and we told our landlords so they put decon underneith our trailer well they crawled under the pipe coverings under the floor and died. So then my landlord refused to pay to have them removed. We called a terminator ourselves and he told us to get out and make them pay for it because I was 7 months pregnant and he said me and Aidan could die from it. They're response was We looked it up and put fabreeze down the vents. We'll take it off your rent. So then when maggots crawled up the vent (it was in our bathroom and we had to block it off and me being hugly pregnant would have to get up like 8 times a night to go all the way on the other side of the house to use the bathroom) well then they turned into horse flies. They're response was buy fly paper and we'll take it off the rent! Ha! I had enough. I wasn't going to endanger our family anymore and we broke our lease 7 months early and move. We moved out first and then we told them. They threatened to take us to court for breaking our lease and I just told them if they did I'd bring the extermintator iand have him tell the court what he told us and then I'd tell them how they were being cheap and still wouldn't have someone come out and do it. So anyways the point of this story is to tell you I know how you feel, I'm really really sorry, don't touch mouse droppings, and don't put decon anywhere they can crawl up and you can't reach them. Oh and your landlord is supposed to re-imburse you for buying that stuff or buy it them selves. Attach the reciete to your check and take it off.

totally sick. in our lease, it specifies we are responsible for exterminators/pest control. we knew something was probably up when we saw that in the lease, because i've never heard of that being included before. after a lovely run with fleas for months at a previous place, we discussed our concerns before we signed here. at that place, i split a hefty bill with the landlord because we had to have exterminators come twice. i'm just naive. but, i seriously need to rent a cat!

Rats and mice carry typhus fever, Trichinosis, plague, infectious Jaundice, Salmonella food infections, and the Hantavirus. I so feel for you. We have a really old house and last winter, we had them and it was awful. that scratching noise makes my skin crawl. We just finally trapped them and so far this year, no mice.....yet.

Ugh, we had rats in our old apt., twice and it really sucked. Like, one time I went to my room, turned the light on and it just ran right past me to the kitchen. I was soo freaked out! We used those little pellet poison things and they died, but I know you said you don't want to kill them.. I think it really sucks that your landlord won't pay for things like this. Anyway, I really hope y'all get rid of them soon. I know how much it sucks to have the constant thought that they're in your home. :/

Even if it's in the lease, if it's not legal, you don't have to stick to it. Do you live in a building that has more than one unit? Sometimes if there is two or more units and more than one have mice, it's still the landlord's responsibility. Having mice really sucks. Our last place had an out of control mice problem.

I feel you hun. I think we have mice here, but we live in the country so it's kind of expected. I haven't seen any yet but I thought I heard one yesterday, and said something to Jason and he was just like "Yea it's probably a mouse" I freaked out! I know what you mean though, I hate the sound of them and if I see one I will probably jump on my bed and stay there till someone comes but, I still don't want to kill it :(

Oh I so feel for you! I had a neighbor who had a rat problem, which meant I too had a rat problem. I hated every second of it, and like you while I wanted them gone the traps an everything made me so sick.... ugh. I hope there is some way to hold your landlord accountable, please check into that. It seems fishy to me. Hugs.

That's a crummy situation. At least the landlord is doing something though... maybe he will come back to clean up later? And as for the upstairs woman maybe you could wait a little bit before you tell her... or spare her the thought of the dead mice altogether... if the mice are gone by the time she gets back and the poison they used isn't harmful to the baby.

I am hoping that they do NOT die in your walls. I've had a dead rat in my daughter's bedroom where we used to live, we didn't know for WEEKS and it is the most awful smell ever. Ugh.

My mother and I were just talking about mice the other day. She said if you drop peppermint oil all around your house, it will make the mice go away because they don't like the smell. She said you could soak cotton balls in the oil. I thought it was an excellant tip for those who are looking for a humane way to get rid of them. She also said that moth balls help too. I'm not sure where she got the tips from, but can't hurt to try. I'm sorry your having to deal with mice. Hopefully something will work out and they will be on their merry way.

ew, mice. They aren't as bad as roaches, but still they do suck. I know it doesn't work for everyone, but we used to get mice like, somewhat often and then we got a cat, since then (over 10 years ago) we have had one mouse. :) Good luck, i hope you are able to get rid of them soon!

I don't have too much advice either, just wanted to let you know it is not your fault at all, I've heard of 4 different friends already this "winter" that have multiple mice. If you are worried about killing them I am pretty sure you can get traps that they walk in that don't kill them, but then if you do that and put them back outside they might just come back in. ;( You'd have to like drive them far away or something. If you can try to find where they are getting in and block that off it would help, but finding it is half the battle. Good luck :(

I also heard that mice do not like mint smell. I doubt there's any fresh mint in season that I could pick up and put in pots. Perhaps I'll check out the oil, depending on price. But so far, we only caught that one mouse 2 nights ago, and there have been no droppings since (or scratching in the wall, etc.)

Our neighbor tried to poison the rats he had, and while he did get some of them (which was appalling) he also got my cat. So please be careful with what he is using and how he is delivering it. My neighbor mixed something in peanut butter I guess, which any number of living things will try to ingest.

[/quote] The maintenance people at our apartments had to cut open the wall in her room to extract it, they said it was really big. It smelled for a good month and I just couldn't make her sleep in there, so we kept the window open and the door closed for about that long. It was so disgusting.

The things that emit a signal do NOT work at all. If you have a rodent problem, you can try and get rid of the humainly, but you are going to have to catch them and drive them three or more miles away from your house or they will come right back in. And, more will probably come in anyway. What I would advise doing: Walk around your apartment and block up any holes with (I'm having a brain fart and can't remember the name of the stuff) that metal/cotton stuff. That will stop them from coming in. Second, make sure that you don't have food laying out EVER. Cover the trash can, take the trash out every night, make sure that dishes are done every night, crumbs are swept up, there's no food on the counter, that food that is in plastic bags are either put up high in cubbards, or put into thick plastic containers. Third, I would get some poison. There's a type of poison (this is gross, I'm sorry), which drys the mice out from the inside out -- so it kills them and when they die, they don't rot in your walls because there's nothing really to rot. They make it so that it is in a seed packet, and that way the mice bring it home to their babies and it kills them as well. If you're in an apartment building and your neighbors have pets, let them know that you are doing this because if their pets eat a mice that has poison in it, they could get super sick/die. I didn't want to kill the mice in my place either, but it was too much to deal with. They say that if you are actually seeing the mice, then there are waaay more than you think there are.

He'd mix poison in PB and then use it as bait in a snap trap. It used to make me mad, because he'd use a butter knife and leave it in the sink still covered in poison/PB with the other dishes (one time he put it in a sink full of S's bottles, which I threw away, but he didn't get why I was so upset)

My neighbor just had it on plates, in various places around his house/yard. I would see the rats occasionally around that time and after he put the poison out they started to look drunk and would fall off the wall between our houses and stuff. It was revolting to say the least. Then he went outside with his pellet gun and shot the sluggish ones.....it was really appalling. My cat was otherwise healthy, then bam. You have to be so careful with poison of any type in any degree of strength.

for the record, i live in a 2 family home with no pets. the poison is only in our basement (unfinished, only accessible from a cellar door outside), it is not around the outside of the house or even inside the house (living quarters). i have not heard a single scratch or seen another dropping since that one night i saw the actual mouse. the next morning, we caught one mouse- if it was the same one, i'd never know. we have no food outside of the refrigerator except for some cans. all cardboard and plastic stuff got thrown away because i don't fuck around. thankfully, i had just given away a ton of dry goods to the boy scout pick up last weekend. anyway.
