Breast at 9 months?? Need a nurses opinion

When I was getting Sydney out of the bath last night I noticed her ariola was swollen and a little red. It was warm to the touch and there was a "lump" the size of half a pea under it. I took her to the doctor today and the redness had gone away but there was still the little lump. The doctor said that is was breast tissue!!!! I was like OMG, breast bud on a 9 month old? So she told me to watch for changes in her vaginal area (hair) and if any came up they would do blood work. She said Sydney's body is producing a little more estrogen than normal. What causes this?? Is it anything I should be worried about and what happens if she does get hair "down there" this early??? I'm worried.......I also have herpes, could this be a factor in all this? I didn't tell her doctor I had it and would rather not unless it plays a part in whats happening to Syd. I'm scared.....someone give me some advice, please.

Hey there! Here's what I can tell you about it, though I'm not a nurse.

Newborns often have breast buds and can even produce milk. This is due to hormone levels at birth, and is very common. It's not as common with older babies and children. If she were to begin to develop pubic hair, it might be a sign of something going on in the adrenal gland. This could be caused by a lot of different things. I don't think that your having herpes would have any effect on this, though...at least, I've never read or heard anything connecting the two.

If she does start to develop pubic hair, your doc would most likely send you to an endocrinologist. The endocrinologist would help you figure out why her hormone levels are that way. I know it's easy for me to say this, when it's not my child, but try not to worry about it too much. I bet she's just fine, but even if something were to Definitely keep an eye out for things such as changes in the vulva or rapid growth, just in case, though. Also, if the breast buds become warm to the touch, or look red, or seem tender, you'd also want to tell your doc (babies can get mastitis!) Just having breast buds, though, is not harmful to her.

Oops, I left an unfinished sentence. It meant to say...

even if something were to be wrong, the doc should be able to take care of it.

THANKS both of you! Sydney has a never slept through the night and wakes up like 3-4 (sometmes more) time a night. We co-sleep and she's breastfead. Could these night wakins be a result of the extra estrogen that she's making? Just curious.....
