What the ESSENTIALS are for an apartment to survive!!!

I am moving out into an apartment with BD and Andrew on December 1st!!! I am excited but need to know if there are some things I need that arent at the tip of my tounge. I bought dishes, and a ton of utensials, cups, coffee maker, toaster, and stuff ut I don't know what else I should have at hand and I need to start buying soon!! HELP!!

What do you have in your apartment that you know you use a lot or atleast once and a while that is a must or should have?

What the ESSENTIALS are for an apartment to survive!!!

when my friends first moved in to their new appt they had no tv, radio or anything so what they survived on for entertainment for a while was a deck of cards. Thats the first thing that came to my mind and i know its not very useful but it sucks when u have nothing to do except stare at the blank walls. Good luck with moving!

Trash can! (Sounds silly but I forgot one when I lived in an apartment this summer).
Spare light bulbs
Cleaning supplies
All other toiletries
Can opener (I always forget this one too)
At least one sharp kitchen knife
Measuring cup

Good luck with the new place! That's so exciting.

Go through your day and try to write down every thing you use.

That should give you a good idea of what you'll need in your apartment.

Don't forget a laundry hamper!

you say you bought dishes but did you get pots & pans too? I bought a bunch of boxes of mac & cheese when i moved out them realised i have nothing to cook them in.

also measuring cups & kitchen utencils for stiring. blender isn't a must have but is nice to have. it you have to put off getting one dont stress I didn't think about how I didn't have one much till I got one as a gift. casserole dishes. uh, a vaccum & broom & mop.

Don't forget about your paper goods - toilet paper, tissues and paper towels. Also some sort of wastebasket or trash receptacle. Bath towels. Dish soap and bath soap. Shampoo. Spices or seasonings for cooking (at the least, salt and pepper).

Best of luck in your new apartment!!

I would definately suggest picking up a few extenstion cords and/or power strips. They are nice to have if you need them in a pinch. Paper plates and plastic cups are good to have around, especially in the first few days when you might not be settled yet. Also, dishtowels are nice to have, and if you don't have a dishwasher, a dish pan and drainer. A microwave, while isn't a necessity, can be a good thing and you can find a decent one at walmart for like $30. As carbon said, write down everything you use for a day or two and it will help you decide what you need.

Scissors - probably a couple of pairs of the heavy kitchen kind that come apart so you can wash them.

A medium sized sharp chopping knife.

A cutting board.

A wooden spoon.

At least one 9" or bigger skillet, 2 quart pot and a cake pan.

Hangers.

Cleaning supplies.

A bucket.

Lightbulbs.

Scotch tape.

A basic toolkit ( a hammer, phillips screwdriver, flathead screwdriver, utility knife, pliers and an adjustable wrench )

A rug to put in the doorway to catch dirt from shoes.

Two hampers and two laundry baskets.

Lots of towels.

Basic kitchen supplies like flour, sugar, salt, pepper, a few frequently used seasonings (depends on what you cook, for me garlic, basil and oregano)

Measuring cups and spoons

that's all i can think of right now.

I would say get some nice curtains. I hated having people be able to look inside and hanging up sheets is never fun so splurge on some nice curtains.

TOOLS! When I moved into my first apartment I didnt have a hammer or the screw drivers with the different size/shape heads and it sucked. Also a measuring tape and some masking tape will come in handy too.

What the ESSENTIALS are for an apartment to survive!!!

The easiest way for me to do this is to go down the list room to room

Kitchen must haves:

plates
bowls
glasses
forks
knives
spoons
pots and pans
kitchen towels
dish soap
pot holders
can opener
collander
cutting board
sharp knives (at least one)
large stirring type spoons, spatulas
garbage can

(ALL of these things you can get at Dollar Tree)

Bathroom:

Shower curtain and rings
bath mat
rug
garbage can
toothpaste
soap
towels
wash rags
toilet paper

For living room and bedrooms I guess there arent really any MUST haves other than your bed and sheets and stuff..

MISC things:

lightbulbs
aluminum foil
tape
vaccum
broom
dust pan
garbage bags
cleaning supplies
air freshener or candles
blinds or curtains
box of baking soda to put in the fridge (keeps nasty smells and tastes from getting into other foods)
um...Im sure theres more but Im drawing a blank.

I was actually looking for that same exact thread and couldnt find it.

Actually with the rent 100% utilities is included! I have a cell phone and so doesnt BD so we are gonna hold off getting a telephone right away. We really don't need one as long as we have our cell phones. THANKS!!

Word on the plunger!

I get really nervous living somewhere without one, like I'm tempting fate or something.

Paper and a pen to write down a list of all the things you forgot.
