the doctors want me to get austin off of his formula (i know not breastmilk) and start him off on foods and such, so i guess when i run outta the cans that i have from wic i will start him on it for good, how did this all work wit everyone here, i know that there are certain guidelines to follow by to make sure that they are getting the right amount of everything, but how did you guys follow it?

it might be hard to go from all formula to solid normal food. you probably want to start gradually adding solids to his diet. Kasia started with rice cereal, then baby food she ate the stage 1 foods but would never eat stage 2 and hardly ever eats baby food anymore she just wants to eat off our plates.

thats how austin is, it just seems like its gonna be so hard to get him to be off the bottle for good, i guess he can have milk and he only will take it wit a sippy cup with a soft spout...but he's not interested in baby jar food anymore either, hes all about feeding himself, i tried the baby food thing still, and it didnt work, i get him the gerber food and snacks where he can pick them up himself, which seems to be working well for him, its just that they are so damn expensive!!

You should really go from formula to homogenized milk at this point. Don't completely rid of the bottle. What will he drink? Juice? Not very healthy. He's still going to need the nutrients found in milk. And homogenized is great because it has more fat than 2%... therefore it will keep him healthy and strong.

I just wanted to say that this forum is used for questions about breastfeeding, so in the future if you post questions like this is Bringing up Baby or As They Grow..you might get more responses. Just to let you know!

i moved your threads to bringing up baby.

anyway, i also cut off the bottle cold turkey at 1 year and my kiddo did fine. i think the longer they have it the more of an attachment they grow to it and the harder it will be to get rid of. we are vegetarians and do soy milk and he switched to that (in sippy cups, and now sometimes regular cups...he's 19 months now) from formula at 1 year. trust your instincts on how much he eats of what kinds of foods (BALANCE!). if you have questions, talk to your doctor, a nutritionist, or a wic person. they are generally good with nutritional advice and easily accessible at appointments (plus their entire job depends on nutrition information).

I took J's bottle away at 10 mos cuz she could drink from a cup, so that was the end of bottles for her. I gradually mixed the formula with milk, until it was all milk at 1 year, well actually 15 mos, cuz her ped wanted her on straight formula for an eatra 2 mos cuz she was 2 mos early, and I took one month to completly switch to straight milk. Anyways she was fine with just the sippy cup. She would ask for her bottle on occasion, but she accecpted the cup.
