Is this really abnormal?

Ok well I did not find out I was pregnant until I was about 15 weeks or so. (Dont want to bog you all down with that story, but if anyone wants to know just ask :) ) But at my first OB appt, I was told that they had found beta strep b in my urine. They gave me antibiotics to try and knock it out of my body, but I was told that regardless I'd still have antibiotics in my IV when I go into labor. Now I am currently 35 weeks and at my 33 week visit, I had my "real" beta strep test and it came back positive AGAIN!! So once more they've given me amoxicillin..and Im just wondering if anyone else had had this happen or if its just something really abnormal and such.

I had group b strep with my first and they gave me antibiotics during childbirth... I don't *think* it's rare... or is it even the same thing?

I didn't get tested for some reason, but they still gave me IV antibiotics during labor, and I know quite a few people who were positive. It's fairly normal.

Group B strep, or Beta Strep is VERY common. I never had it, but I had antibiotics during labor and before for infected amnio fluid. I had ruptured membranes for 4 days before birth of both of my daughters. They were also both premature. Not my son tho, they had to break my water with him. lol

group b strep is fairly common. its usually not harmful for healthy adults so it seems odd that they would try to treat it before instead of just waiting for birth. bombarding your body with antibotics all the time isnt good. first, they kill good bacteria and can lead to yeast infections and second, bacteria gets resistant to drugs, so called super germs.

Yeah, I was gbs positive and am really surprised that they tried to treat you before your delivery. I didn't even get antibiotics during delivery because I got to the hospital too late. hospital protocol says that they will treat the baby if the mom doesn't get two doses of antibiotics, but my laboor went really fast so my pediatrician elected not to treat him.

He did get taken to the neonatal intensive care unit to be watched though. Which was scary.

Group B Strep Infection in Pregnancy

What is group B strep?
Group B strep is a certain kind of bacteria (germ) that lives in the vaginal or rectal areas of 10 to 35 percent of all healthy adult women. A woman who has group B strep on her skin is said to be "colonized" with this germ. For every 100 colonized women with group B strep who have a baby, 1 or 2 babies are infected with these germs while they're being born and can get sick.

If I have group B strep, what could happen?
Carrying the bacteria in your body when you're pregnant doesn't make you sick. In some cases, though, group B strep germs can multiply inside your body and can cause serious infection. When you are pregnant and have group B strep, your baby could get the germs from you during delivery and get sick. Infected babies need treatment. Your baby will be kept in the hospital some extra days for close watching (observation) if your doctor thinks the baby is infected with strep. Blood tests will be done to see if your baby has group B strep. If your baby has this germ, the doctor will give the baby antibiotics.

How will I know I have group B strep?
Your doctor can do a skin culture to see if you have group B strep on your skin. Your doctor can also do a test on your vagina and rectum to see if it is inside your body. The test is like a Pap smear.

If I'm infected, what can I do?
Your doctor may have you take antibiotics during pregnancy until you give birth. Then, when you're in labor, you can also take antibiotics to kill the germs. If you take antibiotics while you're in labor, the chances are higher that your baby probably won't get this infection
