i have to admit i've been an ani fan for a while. although i never listen to her non stop. i'll usually have one of her older albums on repeat for a day or two and then not listen to her for months. i guess i have to admit too that her voice gets abnoxious at times especielly on her live albums (that and she can be fucking rude to her audience but hey everyone has their snarky moments) but i really like her lyrics and her politics ring true for me.
i also really like some of the other grrrly folk singers mentioned like tracy chapman, dar williams, indigo girls, tori amos, joni mitchell. i'm also a big u2 fan and i love classic rock.
Kaya (at least I think it was Kaya) sent me an Ani cd for a swap, and I finally got into it. I don't like her voice at ALL, but I like the lyrics.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Tori Amos. My husband doesn't like her, but admits that "she has this hysterical, frenzied energy that drags you into her songs".
I also love Patty Griffin. You people MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUST get a Patty Griffin song!!!!! Oh my god. I love her. Violently. I recommend Making Pies, Change, Tony, Christina, Flaming Red.
If anyone went to Lilith Fair and got the sampler CD, her song Carry was on there. She also did Cain, on the Lilith Fair CD that was released.
I love Dar Williams, Sarah Mclachlach, Indigo Girls, um.... Paula Cole, Alanis...

haha. im so with you maja. i liked her so much back in the day (up till maybe 95?) when you could see her play for 10 bucks. sometime around when she strted charging 30 bucks for her shows, i stopped listening, and her new shit just annoys me.
amazing lady bands? the gits, atari teenage riot, the barcelona pavillion, bikini kill, cat power, mirah, gillian welch, the gossip, the need, lady saw, liz phair, missy elliot, rilo kiley, kelis, julie doiran, sixty stories, the mandarins, macy grey, lauren hill, the fugees, mum, sleater-kinney, that dog, go sailor, cub, tracy chapman, jill scott, the yeah yeah yeah's, submission hold, lali puna, bjork, lil kim, hanin elias, julie ruin, cadallaca, kaia...and of course, team dresch (best. band. ever.)
there are so freaking many folks who rock and have awesome inspiring lyrics.
I wonder if it is the same church that I saw her play in Buffalo in 1994 or 1995. It was so great back then to see her. I liked her with the band much better than I like her alone. I also think that back then she played really varied shows and nowadays if you see her on the same tour more than once she plays all the same songs and tell the same jokes. She is still really good, though.

i will say that her newer things dont get me as much as the old. i find two or three off any of the newer albums.
