how do you afford new stuff on a budget?
we don't have much money to afford new stuff and i want our next place to match! my mom is giving us her couches (which are white and oh so comfy) but i feel like the rest of the stuff is all mismatched and looks terrible...

we are married.
not a damn thing in our ouse matches.
as long as you have what you need you should be ok, even if it doesnt match.
if you dont have what you need look into local crisis centers. they usually help.
ohhh no mama we have so so so much furnature its just that none of it matches... no crisis just me being picky lol
Have you checked out like the Salvation Army or Thrift stores? I actually got my futon at the salvation army for really cheap that came with a big coffee table and an end table that all match it and they are all in perfect condition.
we bought our couches at the salvation army as well but after xan's first year they look like crap (as would anything that got shit and peed on for the first two months of xan's life lol) and they are really uncomfortable. i just want stuff that matches and looks like us kwim?
You could always save up for matching slip covers for your couches and chairs. It would make things match, look newer, and is a lot cheaper then buying new furniture.
I have 2 hand-me-down couches - one from 1932 (family hand me down through 4 generations now) and one from 1980. They are both butt-ugly, but with a bit of restuffing of cushions and some reasonable slip-covers (spent $85 all together) they are actually attractive and comfortable.
I also made some cheap throw pillows - bought fabric remnants for less than $1 a yard and made like 8 throw pillows which made them look a lot more updated.
Also, I stapled batting around the arms to plump them up and give the couches a more modern shape - which really helped the slip covers to fit well.
I think all together I spent about $100 bucks and ended up with two really comfortable, pretty couches.
Now if I could just find attractive, inexpensive fabric for my curtains ......
GREAT ideas!!!!
The as-is dept of Ikea.
I remember feeling bad about my old apartment when stuff didnt match, it made it looks messy even when the place was spotless.
I buy a lot of furniture at Ikea, not only because it's so cheap, but because even though their sets and styles go in and out, they have maintained the same finish colors since forever ago.
exactly heather, no matter how much i cleaned it still didn't look clean and tidy b/c nothing matched lol...
Do you have a Big Lots (or Odd Lots) near you? Quite often they've got new, but discontinued, furniture fairly inexpensive. We got two futons there for $99, but the only problem is, they don't deliver. Luckily, my brother has a truck that he loaned us. :)
