Irregular periods do not necessarily mean irregular ovulation.
Also, it can take a while (years sometimes) for women to have regular periods after they first start menstruating.
it started 3yrs ago and still messed up :(
periods usually don't become regular for up to 6 years after your first menses. Some periods never become regular, nor does every woman ovulate with every period.
You should read about fertility charting if you're interested in all this. It's important for us as women to know our bodies, charting is a great way of becoming more in-tune with yourself and your inner workings.
here's a good place to start... it's a short slideshow about charting

my periods were never regular, and i had them for almost 8 years when i got pregnant. but i was also diagnosed with PCOS when i was 15 so that could be y... it is one of the symptoms of PCOS, which is acutally fairly common, about 10% of women have it... but ur body could still be regulating itself!!
I got my period when I was 14, and had really strange irregular periods. I'd have one 'normal' period about every 6 months, and in between those I'd have weird things where I'd bleed only enough to need a pantyliner, but it would last for 2-4 weeks, with a month in between. This lasted until I was 19 and went on the pill, which I've been on now for about 8 months. Now I'm obviously regular so that I know I'll get it every fourth tuesday night heheh. (I love my new divacup)
I did not have regluar periods until about 2 years after i had my daughter. and i had been having them for 4 or 5 years before i got pregnant.
you can chart your cycle using many different techniques. doing this makes you aware of what your body is doing and gives you a much better chance of knowing when you are to ovulate.
