Coloring your hair..

I hope it's OK to post this here. I guess it's got to do with at least a part of my body, ha ha. I had my hair highlighted a couple months ago and now it is starting to show my roots pretty bad. I cannot afford to get it done again right now and want to color my hair so my roots don't show so bad. I have dark brown hair but my highlights are blondish. Can I color over my highlights and it still turn out to be the color on the hair color I want or will it mess the chemicals up in the hair die and maybe turn orangish? Just wondering before I slap this stuff on my hair. Any suggestions to a brand of hair color to use?

Of course it would be best and safest to go to a salon to get it done, but if you don't have the money, would your hairstylist be willing to talk to you about it (free of cost) and what you should do as far as buying box color? If you have large chunky highlights, those parts probably will not look the same color as the rest of your hair, but it will more than likely blend in better than the highlights do now. Using a temporary dye will cause the brown you put over the highlights to fade and turn a grayish color (probably...it's not really an exact science, heh) or at least less brown than they will be right away.

Like I said, though, the best way to go would just to ask a stylist to give you tips on coloring your hair at home and may also have suggestions on the dye to buy that will work best for you.

If I were you, I'd go to a beauty suppy tore [Sally's is my favorite] and ask their opinion.

To my knowledge, coloring your hair a darker color over a light color [blonde to black let's say], it will cover. However, if you do a light color over dark [blonde to black] it will go wacko.

Again, maybe you can call up a Sally's in your area and ask them. You might have to bleach your whole head and then dye it [I highly doubt it though].

Also, Sally's always has coupon books in front of their store so maybe you can find a deal!

in the summer i always do light colored highlights and my hair is dark brown. normally if i don't have the cash i do it at home. i buy a box of color the same color as my natural color and go from there. normally it will cover the blonde but in a few weeks they will start to show through again but not as badly (normally they show through as a golden color). i know the woman that cuts my hair told me she really doesn't know that much about coloring from a box since shes never attempted it. but yea i would go as close to your base color as possible. if it doesn't cover all the way it should atleast get them somewhat closer to your natural color until you can get the $$$ good luck
