TV-free home!

I'm mentioned before that I wanted to have a TV-free home. I'm on day 11 with no TV in the house, and I wanted to update all of you.
It's going great. The kids are home with me today and they're playing. The complained a bit for the first few days, because a bit of movies and Tv was in their daily routine, but they're doing fine. They read more, play together more, and are doing better at working on conflicts because they have no distraction.
TV was one of those issues i felt strongly about beofre I had kids, and when mine were young, but I shifted as the realities of parenting set in. Now I'm trying to shift back, because i think Tv-free home is a realistic goal.

I'd die without tv, okay maybe not, but I'm always turning it on for background noise.

That's great--I'm glad it's working so well for you. :) I have been cutting back on TV/internet for us too (TV for kid, internet for me). I don't know that we'll ever be completely TV free, but it's amazing how much free time I discover when I keep the TV & computer off all day, and how much more fun we have together. Let us know how it goes--are you planning this as a short-term test or as a long-term lifestyle goal?

Did you get rid of it completely or put it up in the attic? That's so cool either way. I want to do that but don't think I ever will. I think eventually I want to get an entertainment center with the cabinet doors that close over the whole thing so it's out of sight out of mind.

We didn't have a tv for soooo long, and I was so proud of it. Then, skool started, and I really-- and I hate to say this, but PBS is a wonderful, wonderful thing on the eve of my midterms/finals. Oh.. how I love PBS. she does only watch a little bit- when we both need a bit of a break...

i had the same ideals when i was a new mom and before i was even pregnant.

now i know that we wouldn't survive without it. sucks to have tv as a babysitter, but i can't afford a real one, i dont have anyone else to help out, and can't get my work done without it. i think the tv free reality is really tricky depending on your circumstances.

That's great, BCPR!

I wish I could go tv free, but it just isn't going to happen. Maybe one day it will, but right now tv is a sanity saver for me.

Though I know we won't be able to be completely TV free (and really, I don't want to (for me) not yet, but the less TV Chloe watches the better), I think cutting back is beneficial to everyone. Since the weather is FINALLY becoming nice, we're gonna spend a ton of time at the park now.

I mean there we can play, cook out, and I can even do my hw if I need to but there are no TV's around to distract us.

How are ways you've cut back on TV?

AMA : Me too. We have TV's, but no cable at all. We don't even have it hooked up so you get the 'free' channels, cause.. I don't know how to do that, heh. Every once in a while, if I need to get dishes done or study and it's just me and Trey won't let me do it, I'll pop in a movie for him to watch, but other then that, TV free is normal.

I miss having no TV, I was an absolute sucker for reality shows, but it's better in general for the house. When I'm away in a hotel on business though, you bet your butt I'm sitting in the hotel room every spare chance sucking in "Creepy Canada", and hundreds of Showcase shows.

I think that is really awsome. I dont want A to watch TV. I want one in the house so she knows what it is and wont be freaked out if she goes to someones house and sees it, but I dont want her to watch it on a regular basis. We have one now but she pays no attention to it yet since she is so young. But I think its great that you did that :D

I'm really hoping to have a tv-free house when I have kids, to try and get them to do other things with their time. It seems like a waste of time to me...

We use to be tv free and I loved it we were all much closer. Then we got one for some video games and some movies. Now it's on from the time we wake till we go to bed and I sit on the computer all day. I hate it. I really need to change some of my habits but I don't know where to start.

But... YEA FOR NO TV
