This is such bullshit. genetically inferior! who are they going to be taking out of the gene pool next, people with mental illnesses? then how bout people who aren't blonde with blue eyes? please if you live in California contact your representative & let them know you are against having your tax dollars spent on this.

From the Article in the Pacific Northwest Medical Journal:

Beginning last November, the city of San Francisco began a program whereupon clinically obese men between the ages of 18 and 55 could undergo a procedure whereupon approximately 1/2 an inch is removed from each vas and the ends are sealed--commonly referred to as a vasectomy--completely free of charge. The overwhelming turnout led the State of California to follow suit, and now California is the first state in the Union to offer state-funded vasectomies to men who have been diagnosed as obese. . . .

By offering such a highly effective form of birth control freely to men who, by clinical diagnosis, have been deemed genetically inferior to the normalized median of homo sapien development, such a gene line would effectively be eliminated.

That is one of the craziest things I've read in awhile. It reminds me of Gattaca. That's creepy, and so offensive.

yeah, that was an excert in a posting on a medical bb, didn't have a link to the article. I looked for the first thing I could find about it after hearing about it on the radio. I'm gonna see if I can find more info on this.

Definitely a hoax. They actually went through a lot of trouble if you read the article.

whew, you were right. hoax didn't even cross my mind. I'm surprised at myself. I usually check snopes before posting an article. sorry I'll try to remember to research better before posting. I just freaked out when i heard about this.

Does the world really need a fake medical journal website for a fake medical association, complete with a phony voicemail system to really pull the suckers in? Apparently somebody thinks so, because they have gone to considerable trouble to create the "Pacific Northwest Medical Journal" site and festoon it with the trappings of a legitimate web page. On it are actual medical journal articles, too, cribbed from such arcane sources as the Croatian Medical Journal, all put there to fool, well, whom, exactly?

The Wall Street Journal's "Best of the Web" site stumbled over this web oddity while investigating a story it had been told about entitled "Curing Obesity Through Sterility: California's Controversial Program Under the Microscope." According to the "Pacific Northwest Medical Journal," California was offering state-funded vasectomies to men who have been diagnosed as obese, for the express purpose of eliminating "fat genes" from the population. That sounded like a hoax story if there ever was one, and with the help of the ubiquitous Blog Patrol, the Journal soon was able to confirm that the story, the site and the publication were all frauds.

Oh man....I feel so much better. I've heard of people paying drug addicts to be steralized, so I figured....you know. Anyway, glad it was a hoax.

I was thinking that was off. SF is more radical than that, I would hope!

But, on another note- I heard on the radio that Californians are the fattest out of all 50 states. Wonder if it's because we drive everywhere?
