Work dilema

I have a problem and need advice!
I had an OK job (mediocre pay but great flexibility) at a law firm and when I moved the plan was that I would work from home. iIt was a great plan until my boss had a stroke 12 days after I moved. He was hospitalized and I was tld he would be in the hospital at least 3 months. The attorney who took charge kept cutting my hours and eventually told me not to come in anymore. I found a new job.
My boss called me yesterday. He's out of the hospital and is upset I was told not to come back. I dont know how to tell him I started a new job. Quitting my new job is not an option because I'm making alot more money. My first pay check was for 3 days and the amount was more than my old check was for an entire week. But at the same time, I care very much about my old boss and i don't want him to feel like I left him in his time of need. it wasn't exactly my decision, but at the same time I did actively seek a new job.
Any ideas?

i think the first thing to do is ask him to at least match the benefits you have in your new job... ie money, flex, et al

There's no way in hell he would. The compsany can't even pay rent and they owe several former employees checks.

I know its not his fault youve moved on, but thats just it, youve moved on and its better for you. Explain that you are working for more money and that youre sorry, but you like where youre working.

Okay, I have no idea what you did at the lawfirm, and how many hours you're working at the new place, but would it be too much for you if you continued working very part time at home for the lawfirm? It sounds like you really care about your old boss and your old job, but at the same time it also sounds like you really like your new job.

If that's not an option, just tell your old boss that you've moved onto a new job that pays better, and that you're very sorry that you can't return. It sucks, but you gotta do what makes you happy. I'm sure he'll understand.

I was just going to say what LadyXanax said. You could make extra money doing the stuff part time from home.

Maybe you could offer to train someone new for them? Sort through resumes, do phone interviews? When I started the job I am working at now I went back to my old job for a couple of hours in the evening twice a week for two or three weeks to get everything sorted out. If your boss cares about you he will understand that you have to do what's best for you. Just remind him you weren't planning to find another job but the situation forced you to and you happened to find something that is better for you. Another possibility is that he doesn't realize that the lawyer he left in charge managed to sort things out and they really don't need you. Or they don't need you enough to keep paying you. It sounds like the budget is really tight. Maybe your former boss is just out of the loop.
