WIC was cool, now what about foodstamps

I just got on WIC for myself (pregnant) and my son. They were way cool there and pretty helpful, they just checked our income and health and stuff.
Are foodstamp people that nice? I did the online calculator and it said I am eligible for $250-$270 in foodstamps, so I am thinking of applying. But do you have to go in every month? DO they ask about child support? Can you just get that without doing all the welfare to work stuf, since you aren;t getting cash?

Thanks for help- me and my boy are living on WIC cheese, juice, and day old bread!!

i didn't have to go in every month when i got foodstamps, i can't remember for sure but i think it was like twice a yr ?
you have to report every little detail about your life, which was annoying but hey, it's free food so i'm not complaining. u have to take these forms to your employer to fill out, to your school, get your bank statements, child support checks, so on and so on.

I work at Papa Murpheys and people can use food stamps there, because technically its not "prepared" food bcus you still have to cook it at home, we just "assemble" it..so jus so any of you who are on food stamps know..you CAN use them at papa murpheys which is pretty cool if you want pizza!

It's certainly not for me, I have no children. A friend of mine in Joysee needs it as she just found out she's expecting not one.

...not two....

wait for it, wait for it.

TRIPLETS.

no fertility drugs, or genetic history either.

The people at food stamps here aren't nice at all. heh
They're real easy to get though but you do have to show them all of your ID and whatnot. They should give you emergency FS if you have under $100(i think). Then you'll get those withing 3 days. (thats how i worked with me)
I have to go every 6 months and they just want to make sure nothing has changed.
It's definitely worth it though, it's helped me a lot. Go as soon as you can becasue they will give you the FS back until the day you applied.
Also something I found out. They can't force you to go for child support. Just tell them you don't want to(if that's the case) Although sometimes if you don't go for the support then they might take away some of your benefits. For me it was $80 and it was worth it for me to not get the support.

It's like a debit card. They put X amount of food stamps in your account. Then when you go to the market you swipe your card and put in your pin number. It's a lot easier than having to count out all those paper food stamps. I remember going to the market with my grandmother back in the day and they always confused the hell out of her. Now she can't figure out how to use the machines right, so I guess you can't win. lol

Food stamps and medicaid vary from state to state. I was first on it in Ohio. I had to go in every month to get re-certified. Then I switched counties (still in Ohio) and had to go every 3 months. My medical card was a cheap piece of paper that I got once a month.

Then I moved to South Dakota. I had to go in to get re-certified every 6 months there. My medical card was like a credit card that they would swipe at the medical centers to make sure I was still eligible to be receiving medicaid.

Now I'm in Illinois. I have to go in every 3 months for foodstamps. My medical card is a cheap sheet of paper once again.

If you're not applying for cash, you don't have to worry about child support or doing all the job searches.

Good luck!

P.S. People at the food stamp office are SLOW. It will take you 10 times longer to get anything done there then you could possibly imagine.
