That's a pretty good find.. isn't fun to get baby stuff? I've alreazdy got a bunch of stuff and I'm only about 11 weeks.. of course i did have a little help from my mom who has already went a little overboard on sleepers at garage sales.. but anyways.. have fun with the baby shopping.. its never to early to start watching yard sales and thrifdt stores you never know what you'll find and the prices are usually pretty affordable..

garage sales rock for baby stuff. I got 90% of Eric's clothes at garage sales. And I sold them at another one when I was done! Yeah, my mom got a little excited with them too, and she ended up buying him a ton of stuff so he had enough clothes for the 1st 6 months just from garage sales!

How old is the crib??

I know in canada, they having warnings that any crib thats older than 1986, is actually illegal to sell, import or advertise.....i had to turn down a crib for this reason. Thats just canada though....i really dont know the details surrounding this law or anything, so i dont know how serious it is, too have a crib that old, or what the potential hazards are.

acrane: its because of the way the bars are. before 1986 the bars were too far apart (this is what i've been told) and thats what makes them illegal.
dont quote me on that tho.. im just going by what i've been told.

I think you're right Nicole.

If you're buying an old crib or recieving an old crib, there's ways to see if it meets today's safety standards. This is important for any crib manufactured before 1974.

  • The slats/bars of the crib should be no further apart than 2 3/8 inches. If they're further apart then that, there's a chance that your wee one's head can slip into the bars, become trapped, and pose a risk of suffocating/choking. This is the same if there's decorative cutouts on the headboard or footboard of the crib. A child's head can become trapped in decorative cutouts if they're too large; it's best to avoid cribs that have these.

  • Make sure that the paint on the crib is not lead based, which many old cribs use. It can be toxic to infants, even when it's dry. You could probably get that checked out at a home renovation store, or if you think it may be, sand the paint off and refurnish it.

it does have to do with both the paint and the bars. the paint in older cribs had lead.
