Does anyone have or know an article that proves diet soda is/is not harmful to kids? I looked but I'm bad at looking for stuff online. A friend and I are debating about this. I always heard it was harmful but her doctor said it was fine.

Well it has aspertane in it which is a carcenogen..carcan..
thing that means cancer causing.
It also makes you retain water
Its not something really anyone should drink
its a nasty filler. why give a kid soda when they could have fruit???
Is that confirmed? I know I avoid aspartame, because people weren't sure if it was carcinogenic or not, but I didn't think it had been definitively shown to be.
oh..im not 100% sure on that one... I read a bunch about it and my memory is sort of blured. However either way, its not supposed to be good for you. Theres other health problems it creates.
#1 pop isn't good for anyone, whether it is diet or regular. water is a million times better.
#2 check this out http://www.snopes.com/toxins/aspartame.asp
erika, I 100% agree with #1. And I'm going to check out that site. Thanks!!
erinn, way true what you said! I never had soda as a kid and when I did, it was VERY rare. My friend gives it to her kids sometimes.
But thanks! I'll read that article. :D
Soda (both diet and regular) is full of artificial sweeteners, empty calories, and (usually) caffeine. Basically junk food in liquid form. While it's not necessarily *harmful* in moderation, it is nutritionally deviod. When kids are young, they need all the good nutrition that they can get to help them grow, and they need guidance in making good food/drink choices so that they will be more equipped to make good choices for themselves a few years down the road.
Soda is also more expensive than other healthy drinks, like 100% fruit juice. And water is free! :)
the sugar content in pop/soda is enough to cause a baby tooth to dissolve, if left in the liquid for a mere 24 hours. It is horrible for everyone, but especially children. It also teaches them poor nutritonal behaviour for the future.
My mom gives Lyric diet coke sometimes and I tell her not to...argh. But in our house we drink soy milk, 100% juice and water. Then of course, I drink coffee & stuff... My brother used to drink tea and coke when he was little (like, 2+) and his teeth turned really brown from it and they started decaying... I don't if this affects it but he has braces now.
Heather, I was like Lyric. I really had soda once in a very blue moon. I had 100% juice, water, milk and ice tea from the powder [but mom hates sweet things herself so it tasted like colored water haha]. Luckily, I don't have a big problem with soda now. I'm trying to lose weight and soda was the easiest thing to cut out of my diet. It wasen't a hassle because I was hardly around it, ya know?
Revolt, 5th grade science project! LOL Some kid in my class did it with teeth he got from his dentist [um ew] and seeing that happen to the teeth that he left in the soda for days at a time...omg NASTY!
Jen, I wish wish wish I was taught how to eat [healthier] when I was young. All the weight and health problems I have now are because of my weight.
Just clapping my hands for you mams, there are tons of you here, that DO teach their children healthy ways to eat. I personally thank you!
