1 month is definitely not to late! My daughter is sleeping on me so I can't type much now but my main advice is find a LLL Leader in your area and get on the phone with them ASAP. The info other women here can give you will be wonderful but it helps a lot to have someone there in person to rely on.

http://www.lalecheleague.org/WebIndex.html , you can find local leader info here.

one month is definitely not too late. see if he will latch on. if not, start pumping and persist with the latch.

You defintely can work on it yourself. The big thing is drink a lot of water, pump as often as you can, and offer your breasts to your baby as much as you can. Walk around topless if possible and hold him often.

Fenugreek and oatmeal are also good to take to help get your milk supply back. As your milk comes back and your baby is nursing start cutting down his formula an ounce at a time and keep an eye on wet and poppy diapers to make sure he's still getting enough.

If you are on WIC check with them and see if you can get a lactation consultant. My friend was able to find one who worked with her for free through WIC. You can also call where you delivered and see if they have a lactation consultant on stuff who can work with you.

http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/relactation.html This website has wonderful info on relactation.

Keep posting with any questions or if you just need some words of encouragement!

They will probably get engorged at some point as your supply evens out. They will definitely get engorged if you are away from your baby for any length of time lol.

If they get engorged while your supply is still working out do NOT pump to relieve the engorgment. Just hand express enough that you are comfortable. If you pump then your body thinks it needs to keep making that same amount of milk so you will keep getting engorged.

As far as being away from your baby engorgment, for me it was about 4 months until the leaking almost all the time stopped and then a couple more months until leaking if I've been away from the kiddos for more than 2-3 hours stopped. That varies person to person though. With my son he nursed every hour on the hour so being away for 2 or 3 hours was at least 2 missed nursing sessions. My daughter was more of a "by the book" baby as far as how often she nursed (every 2-3 hours) but my son was nursing also so my production was higher than it would have been had just my daughter been nursing.

You can do this! I won't lie it's hard enough when you are breastfeeding from day one and I'm sure relactating will bring even more challenges but it does get easier! For most people the day comes when it's totally second nature to lift your shirt latch the kiddo on and sit back and relax to nurse. For myself and a lot of other people I've talked with it takes about 6-8 weeks to get to that point, but then you have months if not years of pretty easy nursing ahead of you. Occasional challenges can pop up (teething and such) but you will be past the hardest point and more often than not it will be an easy and enjoyable time.

Your breasts may get bigger but they may not. The only times you'll be engorged are once you've reestablished your supply, if you go several hours without nursing or pumping, the milk will build up. If you can't nurse when you're engorged, just pump....pumping will keep your supply up anyway.

I think it's absolutely wonderful that you're going to try to relactate. It will be so wonderful for your baby's health, your health and body and the bond that occurs during nursing. I'm so happy for you!!! Just remember, it may be uncomfortable for the first 2 weeks....but it DOES get better!!! After that first week or two, everything gets much much easier. You just have to pass that point!!

Congratulations on your decision to breastfeed!!!

hehe Im getting tired of waking up every hour to make a damn bottle I rather just try this on my own with all of your help and support, The doctor and the councelor was kinda rude when showing me at the hospital so now I dont feel right asking them for help they treated me like shit from day one so why should I have to endure more drama from them. But anyways when I did it last time I dont think I was really getting it lol I thought my junk didnt work because it was just yellow umm shows how much I dont know Im so glad I can ask all the questions I want and get them answered truthfully and not be judged by my lack of breastfeeding knowledge. so thanks again

i'm sorry you have had such a negative experience with 'support' people.
if you go down a few threads to:
http://www.girl-mom.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1436
"too late to start...?"
i posted a bunch of info.
you absoluetly can do this on your own.
the best way to get a milk supply going is to just start putting your baby to the breast as often as possible. lots of skin to skin contact, try latching.
latching can be tricky, especially if you come up against nipple confusion. but you can do it! if you persist and are determined, with a bit of patience, you can do anything! we are here for support, so you really aren't doing it on your own at all either.
i have tons and tons of resources.
so feel free to PM me or email me if you have specific questions.
your breasts may become engorged at first, but generally engorgment only lasts a day or two. your breasts will seem fuller, heavier, larger. but breasts change throughout pregnancy and whether you breastfeed or not.
don't worry about your breasts. i'm sre they are just fine.

It's really great that your trying to relactate, best of luck. I'm sure you'll fine.
Sorry about the crappy so-called professionals, I really wish some people who work in that field would get their head around the fact that they are dealing with women in the midst of life changing experiences and should be supportive, empathic.
And hey, I don't think anyone will judge your lack of breastfeeding knowledge, there's a lot of stuff to get your head around. You have a lot of support here.
Do you have much info at hand about latching on? (I don't know if you breastfed for the first couple of days or not). Looking at a diagram of how much of the nipple and the areola actually goes in the babies mouth can be quite an eye-opener when you haven't breastfed, I know it suprised me!
Good luck!

I can get him to latch on but I dont think I have enough to feed him if I squeeze its still yellowish and nothing beyond a few tries I have to be doing this right lol, should I just let him suck away or is that wrong? that should make the milk come right? I am not gonna give up, I cant take the colic crying and waking up every 1 hour to feed him anymore its driving me crazy Ive been living off of about 3 hours of sleep on and off, Im gonna have to go buy a breast pump and try to way to
thanks for all your help I really like having people explain it to me rather than look at me funny
Thanks again

You should look into getting an SNS like I mentioned in the other thread. You can call 800-435-8316 and see if that gets you anywhere, that's supposedly Medela's customer service line (I say supposedly because it's right next to the CS email address) or just buy one online.

I think SOME kind of IRL breastfeeding teacher/support is in order though.

Getting him to latch is the hardest part so CONGRATS, now you just need to up your supply. If you use an SNS he's sucking and stimulating while getting formula through a tube so it helps because it completely eliminates the bottle (you'll still be making/using formula for a bit though) and stimulates your supply twice as much as a pump would.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20406&item=4306075336&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

You can boil and use that or

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20406&item=2392689460&rd=1&ssPageName=WD1V

You can get a couple of these (they only last a week).

A new SNS online is about 40 but you can get them from an LC much cheaper and some will let you do 2 payments.

Hang in there cause you CAN do this and you are definitely on the right path.

Also, good pumps are usually by Medela or Avent...and I think the Whisper Wear one is alright. I used an Avent Isis which was not only cheap, I could control the suction so that if I was hurting I could ease up when I needed to etc etc.
