She doesn't have to know that she's only being assigned to one person though, I'm sure she could tell her she's being assigned to a group/community, because really, with all of us who want to help, she is.
My office has two Adopt-A-Families right now, both single parents, one with a toddler, one with a differently abled child, and have sponsored Christmas for a senior citizens home, with about 20 seniors on our list. I agree that if you have the resources, it'd be a good idea to check out the adopt-a-family's that your friends or coworkers are taking on. But I'd like to help this girl as well.
Of COURSE I'm not going to say she was adopted by one person. I'm talking with her social worker, the way I'd like it set up is that she still believes all the gifts came from my workplace. I'm not trying to make her the "token" family either, it's just the attitude of my coworkers made me realize they weren't going to do much for her, I originally posted this thread out of my aggrivation at said coworkers, then people started saying they wanted to help.
I'd even thought of saying she was adopted by GirlMom.com, but I wouldn't want her running across these threads if she checks it out at the library. I'm not doing this so everybody kisses my butt for how charitable I am, this woman's situation touched my heart, and I recognized that the attitudes of my coworkers are probably attitudes she faces every single day. I don't know if she'd be dropped by the entire program, but she'd be dropped from my workplace and there are families in the area who aren't adopted even if they apply. And even if she wasn't dropped by the program, there's no guarantee that whoever picks her up wouldn't be just as terrible as the people I work with. I just want her and her kids to have a decent Christmas. Haven't you ever been touched by someone's story and wanted to do something about it? And if you had the resources to do so, would you ignore it?
definitely not, and i do think what you're doing is commendable. i've just been on the other end of receiving charity, and thought i'd mention the things that i said.
you should get her a copy of the Hip Mama Survival Guide.
Where would I write to? I now must confess even I don't have a copy. It'd be excellent if she'd be willing to donate one to her.
I got the call back from the social worker, we're going ahead as if it's being donated by my workplace, I'm supposed to try and have it together to deliver to her office on the 19, if we need more time I can tell her so. Used items will be accepted.
...Maybe her parents were evil overbearing antichoicers...
I'm actually pro-choice myself.. but speaking of judgemental, you ought not to be calling pro-lifers "evil overbearing antichoicers". If her parents WERE pro-life, that doesnt make them evil. Yes, it would have been cruel, and unjustified to push thier beliefs on thier daughter, but "evil"?
What if someone pro-life read that? This is supposed to be a site were NO ONE should be made to feel ashamed for ANY reason, is it not?
Sorry if you think thats a little too outspoken, but I took that rather offensively, and Im not even pro-life.
Secondly.. I think its really great for yout o be standing up for thsi single parents family, and doing so much for them. Kudo's, even though you aren't looking for them. Some people just dont get it, unless they've been in that situation eh? And that sucks.
This isn't a safe space for pro lifers, it's very adamant that this is a 100% pro choice website, a safe space AGAINST anti choicers.
I'm not going to spare the feelings of women, who feel that women shouldn't be in control of their bodies or their futures, or place judgements upon women for controlling their reproduction.

No it is not. THis is a site that is 100% prochoice. If someone who is antichoice (the correct term btw) read that and was offended, then it shows even more that this site isn't intended for them and that they should either find one that is, or look into why we are so passionate about choice and expand their knowledge of choice.
I in no way would want to protect an antichoicer at the expense of the mamas here.
I fully agree with the mamas on the pro-choice stuff. This is in NO WAY supportive of anti-choice stuff, and never has been. This is one of two things girlmom will NEVER change its stance on in any way what-so-ever (the other being support for young mamas). There are probably more, but those are the two big ones.
Back to the OP I have e-mailed Arial Gore with a link to this thread, and will let you all know what she says.
do you have the family's address? i seriously have ten dollars to my name right now, but my family and friends are throwing me a baby shower in january, and i'm sure i'm going to get a lot more stuff than i need. i'd like to send all the duplicates or extras to her. i also thought i was having a boy for a while, and then found out i was having a girl. so i have a lot of gently used baby boy clothes that i got from friends, if she's having a boy. or not, i guess. clothes are clothes right?
I don't have a DVD player.
I guess it's just not my top priority. My VCR was donated to my school and I won it. But I guess that's beside the point.
I can't believe people are actually that cold hearted.
I realize that a lot of people don't have DVD players, the only reason why I made a big deal out of that particular point is that people at my work were behaving as if she had her children just to get money off the system. If she was getting so much money that way, wouldn't she have that? I used it there as a point to say she's not just some "welfare queen" as my coworkers wanted to make her out to be.
Sweetest D, I don't protect the feelings of antichoicers any better than they protect my rights. But thanks for the momentary shift of focus in the thread.
Is there 4 model cars inside? If so, that'd be from me, I gave the guy on Ebay your address instead of mine to save on shipping costs, instead of having it come to my house and then reshipping it to yours. Also expect 2 pounds of chocolate banana bath beads coming soon for the mama! Sorry I forgot to tell you they were coming. I'm still working on the Scooby Doo sleeping bag, I keep getting outbid last minute :( I'm also working on trying to convince hubby to let me ship you a table top air hockey game, brand new, that we've had for 2 years but have never touched, but he's like a little boy, with the "but.. but it's miiiiine, I'll play with it, I promise, we'll go get them something else...", I'll work on it ;)
Oh! And I got the 2 year old a stuffed spiderman that I got Trey a few months ago, and he lovessss, so I figured this boy will probably like it too. I just have to find a box to ship it in. When's the deadline again? Sorry I'm so disorganized with all this ;)
I need to get it to the social worker by the 19. My sis went to a department store here and they had dvds marked for a dollar so she picked up a bunch. Old school bugs bunny and daffy and stuff.
I'm buying candyland. I don't know if they have it, but I loved that game when I was a kid!
Would you pm me the address to send stuff to? (I don't think I saw it on this thread) I'm pretty broke right now, so I can't paypal money to you, but I have a baby boy with lots and lots of potential hand-me-downs.
Could you please PM me the info? We have a lot of older video gaming stuff (games and systems). I havent seen my boyfriend play with any of it since we got this computer so I'm gong to try and get him to give some of it.
I dropped off the gifts at the social worker's this afternoon. Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who helped out, and to everyone who offered. I wish I'd have checked the thread in time again, but I got so busy I've barely been online in weeks.
We managed to raise $90.00 for a grocery store giftcard in addition to the generous gifts, thank you to everyone who contributed!!
I know this may seem a bit off-topic, but I just wanted to thank everyone for helping this family. It touches my heart so much to see that so many people care.

(also to mention that pro life is an incorrect term. These women aren't "preserving life", they're taking away choice and oppressing women)
No it is not. THis is a site that is 100% prochoice. Hey guys, if you decide to send anything, put your username on or in the box somewhere and I'll PM you to let you know when it's recieved.
Do you know what size clothes the children wear?
I don't want to see this fall out of sight
Bump!
Thanks, naivete.
I called the social worker, waiting for a call back about the kid's sizes.
I just got a box of model cars from someone in KY, first name Gary. No username, or I would've PM'd. Thank you!!

Keep an eye out for a package coming from Target/Amazon.
It should arrive before or on the 17th..
